Thank you.
I just recently found out I’m probably autistic. I’m not pursuing formal diagnosis because I’m nearly 40 and I don’t know that having a true diagnosis would change anything for me. (Also I’m in the US and healthcare here is a joke)
That said, I’m AFAB non-binary and I relate to ALL of these things.
This makes a ton of sense! I wonder if there is a connection between women having more mental health issues because women tend to do more masking.
Great video. Thank you for sharing!
Confirming that since my diagnosis I feel much better about myself. I never hated myself but felt super awkward in social situations hence my dangerous relationship with various substances. But now even if I feel a bit weird I calm myself down ‘Hey you’re autistic, so that’s ok’ and I don’t need self medication as often as before😃
I struggled more with my mental health when I was younger Didn’t know I was Autistic then Mostly happy now cause I’ve learned a lot about myself and ways to navigate my autism a little bit better
I think I noticed that if a man was a loner or didn’t socialize much, people wouldn’t really try to push them to socialize as much as women. However, women are constantly pushed into socializing. It seems that if we’re not socializing enough, we get heavily criticized and told we need to get out there more or we need to get psychiatric help. We’re all expected to want to get married and have kids.
Excellent video. I relate to all this.
Spot on!
Yep , I’m high functioning aspi, along with that ptsd, social agoraphobia, panic and anxiety attacks, depression. I hate socialising apart from my small group of aspi friends, much happier staying on the farm with my malinois shepherd dog and my plants , they make much more sense to me. I have misaphonia with sounds , like repetitive barking , engines etc and I can only wear certain clothes , can’t wear shoes in summer , it’s an endless list of shite 😅, but I’m 48 now so learning to live with it . Tony atwoods aspurges book was my first road to help , many years ago. I see aspurges as a gift though, at least we are alive , tuned in to the universe and at one with nature. Huge intuition that I always now listen to, because it’s spot on . Great narcissist and bull crap sensors etc , it’s a gift more than a curse. I can tell what animals are thinking, I speak dog , bird, horse , cow , chicken and cat better than human language. I’d rather be aspi than say a narcissist any day. One ❤ aspi family
Rosie Jones is doing a documentary on channel 4 tonight I can’t type what the show is called but I’m so damm glad she’s done it
I do think I may have autism maybe not. I feel like I’m not me and once I felt it I broke down. I also have a lot of difficulty socializing and being left out. I talk too fast and am very picky and I’m also constantly stimming. I feel angry at people for no reason. Idk if it’s something else or autism. Some days I just come home and I cry. Idk what to do.
That thumbnail is illustrative of my partner. She already knows and everything, but you did a really good job summing it up. Mostly I cook and she’ll do the dishes if we’ve got gloves. She’s really a trooper and sometimes will really jump in the trenches to make a recipe even though she hates it the whole time and is very critical of the results. I really love her and am proud of her.
The male computer nerd sitting in a room playing games is an accepted stereotype. Women? Not so much.
I am and I DO!!!
It’s been a while since the video was out, but having recently done what was arguably more just an updated “IQ and achievement” test that was the bare minimum (because helping disabled people is not a priority in state funding in America), I’m curious, if you can disclose, how much the updated evaluation you got cost.
UK healthcare is different, from what little I understand, but I imagine you still had to pay some out of pocket, similar to what people have to do in America even if they have decent insurance versus mine where it’s low tier
Accurate.
I am 48 and got diagnosed in March. For me it was helpful in accepting myself. But it depends on the person.
Mental health problems camouflaged my autism. I didn’t get diagnosed until age 48.
I hate cooking too. My boyfriend cooks and I do the dishes.
@Cat Lily Sounds like a match made in heaven! 🖖
@Go Away It has worked well for us. We have been together for 12 years and still enjoy each other’s company!
You are so spot on about girls with more anxiety, depression and lack of being comfortable in different socializing. My daughter is 19 but not as nature as her peers the same age. She may not mature anymore so about 15 maybe 16 in certain areas. She is smart and started college but I have to drive her and stay on campus while she’s in class. Thanks for your information on girls as well plus providing the info on the young lady that also put how to help the girls with Autism. I give yals info out to others to help them.
@Cat Lily That warms my heart. I’m really glad y’all have each other. I know sincerity reads like sarcasm online, but I mean that. A happy family is the fuel that runs the engine of a good world. Cheers!
@Go Away Thank you! I hope you find the right person for you (if you haven’t already).
That is the going theory, right?
What’s AFAB?
@Wunjo AFAB = Assigned Female At Birth
I’m 29 and when I was in year 9 (I was 15) I did testing for my learning difficulties and the psychologist that did it said I had extreme learning difficulties and that some areas I was 11 years old instead of 15. Autism was never mentioned. Only in the past few months it came up.
@Cat Lily Assigned? Your sex is observed at birth, not assigned.
I got diagnosed about 2 weeks ago so I really appreciate these videos!!
@Cat Lily I think so! I’m still new to being so involved in the ND community that I’m still finding stuff most people already know.
May be autistic girls have easier social interactions than boys however they both struggle.
Women just adapt better.
They have less stims.
But it is not a general rule.
Me as a probably autistic woman always have had slower start of building new relationships. Me sometimes mimize those who make better.
The older I get life brings more serious situations. Luckily I get better and make us of previous knowledge
You are not alone. I deal with and do the same things. Be encouraged.
@Nikki Mason listen Ik I’m not alone and all but I need answers.
You sound a lot like me before I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, ptsd, chronic depression & anxiety. Would come home from work & sit & cry for no real reason cause I loved my job. It’s not your fault. Mental health does what it wants, but you have to try to show it who’s boss. Try hard to find a psychiatrist right away that can evaluate you & give meds to help. The meds can take a few weeks to help. Also talk about the possibility that you think you may be autistic & see what they say. Don’t wait like I did because it will not get better on its own. I learned that the hard way. Keep in touch so we know how your journey is going.
@Jaime Zimmerman I have an online appointment with a psychiatrist soon, but the thing is I hung out with my friends and I felt fine after even though I was a bit nervous before going. What if I’m not autistic?
Ouch
@Wunjo I didn’t make up the term.
Why ask what it means if you already know?
@Bee That is cool! Welcome!
@EntropY we’ll, if you’re not autistic, then you’re not. I don’t think it’s a reason to be disappointed. 🤔 You need to see a psychiatric & possibly a therapist in *person not online*. I am not a dtr & cannot tell you what to do, but you definitely need to be seen, be evaluated & find out what’s going on so you can begin learning to live with autism, if you have it & any mental health issues you may have. It takes time but is worth it. Good luck.
I’m a 30yr old female who has autism. I’m very much a loner and only very rarely socialise as I have never been accepted. I have always found women to dislike me for reasons that I’ve never known. I love all the regular girly things but still struggle to connect with other women. I have constantly struggled with mental health due to the lack of acceptance in society.
