As a recovering heroin and meth addict I can say it’s one of the toughest things to go through. But that being said I have been clean for 27 months ( 2 years and 3 months) and I have never been so happy it’s all worth it. I work full time my family is back in life I still have things I need to get fixed my teeth being the biggest one but I am so thankful especially when I see things like this I’m grateful I’m still alive. It took 14 years of my life but drugs won’t take anymore! ❤ Yourself your worth it and you can do it.

Lost my sister to opioid toxicity and she struggled for nearly 10 years before her death. These people need help, please don’t judge, everyone has a story. Hoping the best for all of them in this doc.

since I am a heavy smoker I cannot even start to imagine how hard it is to fight and stop using drugs as ice, meth, heroin etc…
When I was young I knew quite a few people using cocaine, heroin, acid and not all of them are still alive 😢
I feel so bad for all addicts (even if it was their choice to start with the drugs) and I only wish there was more help for them 😟
They all need help not judgement!!!!!!!

Reggie Yates has been on British TV, almost exclusively at the BBC, for 30 years. He started off as a child actor, was a children’s TV presenter, Radio DJ and TV host, and has since moved on to be an independent filmmaker.

Just because someone is intelligent does NOT mean that they will never make a stupid decision in their life!

I recovered from meth & Fentanyl & believe me it was truly one of the hardest things I’ve had to do.. I would cry my eyes out.. wanted to sleep but couldn’t, but after that hump I made it through the other side.
Almost a year sober and I’m going to have a great big party 🥳.
Being sober is the best thing I’ve ever done

Not judging people regardless of their status and treating everyone equally, Reggie is such a beautiful human being!

Addiction is so hard to understand on several levels…I’m an addiction specialist who is also the child of addicts and an addict myself and I truly believe that being an addict is what makes it easier for me to understand however without being also educated by professionals I would have no clue why my brain works the way it does or why the drugs do what they do. Never judge what you do not understand and always be open to learning otherwise no need to have an opinion. Empathy not sympathy and support can come in many different ways for many different types of people who suffer differently! Just be better to yourself a lil bit every single day and if you feel like giving up ask for help because you have plenty to live for even if you fail you tried! You never know how strong you can be until you try!

I wish people were as concerned and had empathy for others during the crack epidemic. I hope they get better and heal. Wish these people the best!

I can’t believe the producers of this documentary thought taking that young mother to a place where she uses, with someone she used with and basically prompted her to show her Ice pipe the day before she is going to rehab would be a good idea. This would not help.

I’ve been clean & sober now for 22 years, & honestly, I still can’t believe it’s been that long. And even though there’s been times when I thought I couldn’t go on, & that I just wanted to go out & get completely wasted, I thought of my parents, my kids, & my grandkids, & everything came back to me about why I got clean to begin with. I did it primarily, for ME….but also, to prove to my family that I WAS sick & tired of being sick & tired, and that I WOULD DO IT…..FOR GOOD this time. So I did, & I have, & it’s been the best thing I’ve ever done, besides giving birth to my children. I wouldn’t change a thing. And Reggie, he’s amazing. I would really love to meet him someday.

My Daughter had an addiction to crack and it was terrible. She left my home and lived on the streets. I eventually found her, talked to her and she agree to go into rehab. She had a couple of relapses, but eventually with much praying and encouraging she hit this very bad habit. She is doing great now’ working and got her own apartment and car. We are so very proud of her. People often take drugs because they can’t face reality, drugs help them to escape!

When you hear a politician say something like this, you can expect that their next move will be to convict millions of nonviolent, societally responsible drug users to spend decades in a maximum security prison

Having completed a 4th step(more than once) this is due to our experiences with each other and where WE HAD BEEN WRONG we forget about the other guy and work on ourselves.

Oh please, everyone judges and to not judge is dangerously naive. Though drug use is one thing, there’s plenty of situations and people that judgement is good. You don’t think it’s good for kids to be around this right?

Reggie is a great documentary maker. He shows things in a neutral light without judgement while at the same time sharing his own view on it as well. That’s VERY hard to pull off. Briliant!

“Come and grab a seat in the gutter.” Wow, that hit me like a gut punch. What it says about the way they’re perceived, and what it says about the reality of their lives is just heartbreaking. Reggie does such a great job of seeing these folks as just people, people who maybe made different choices, or took different paths than he did, but not looking down on them. Such a good guy. A phenomenal journalist.

My kids paternal Grandma constantly makes comments that cocaine is for the rich and she had a family member who tried it. What a loaded statement in many ways LOL

I don’t know the history of everything, but I think that was such a first time bomb going off in the middle of a tornado that no one has handled anything like that before. Regardless I agree addict stigma has a long way to go.

From your experience do you believe some people could do hard drugs once in a while and be fine while others are just doomed to go off the deep end?

did you get caught up in the 2000 glut in Aust? It was everywhere in Victoria then.

When Dr Louise was explaining to Reggie what addiction is like (for a non-addict)- is the best description I’ve ever heard. Except she forgot one thing- that when that no-good person you love/need leaves you, you experience a physical pain that rivals surgery with no anesthesia.

I’m an addict. I’ve been clean for 5 years.

“you have to understand that you can’t understand” I’m not an addict. Never taken a drug once in my life but I think that statement sums it up perfectly. We’ll never understand this awful desease. We can only hope that people get the support and help they need to beat it.

I’ve spent a lot of hours thinking about that I’m 51 struggle with crack addiction for 15 years I was a binge user I would be sober for months at a time and then ruin the whole weekend and hide in a room with paranoia thank God I survived and whoever was Left Behind the meth and the pain pills finished them off

@Taylor it’s really not though it’s like being a needle junkie hooked on opiates then getting methadone your still hooked on the needle and the ritual it’s the same as smoking ciggarrettes and the ritual and taste and lighting it and all that I’ve seen people with no money buy smokes instead of food I can go without cigs if I’m hungry but not everyone can.
It’s kind of degrading to tell someone that something is easy just because you did it. (No offence)

Acid isn’t necessarily bad for you, it’s safer and healthier than alcohol, cigs or even weed

I think you mean assumption. Assumption can help greatly and can come without judgement. Judgement in this context correlates to reinforcing negative stereotypes

I’ve been clean from ICE for 14 years now, and even though I moved on from meth to pills, I can say that kicking meth was the HARDEST thing I’ve ever done. I’ve even quit smoking cigarettes (a year and a half ago) and that wasn’t as bad as getting clean from meth. I’m talking a 25 year nicotine habit vs. a 3 year meth habit. I kicked meth and pills with no rehab, no jail time or court ordered treatment, or “rock bottom”. Just got tired of it and I am thankful for that every single day because not everyone has the fortitude to do so. I don’t mean that in a “braggy” way because I have no idea how my brain managed to draw a line in the sand, but it did and once off of it my mind was thoroughly disgusting by the prospect. I truly believe if mental health care was more efficient at helping folks who suffer from childhood trauma we would see a sharp decline in alcoholism and addiction period. Best of luck to anyone struggling with this disease, past, current and future!!!

As a former addict I agree that it is absolutely incredible to hear of someone who has never done any drug, cigarette, or drink in their life. Reggie is amazing on all levels. I wish I had been as level headed as he was/is when I was younger. My heart hurts for Lam. I don’t see that as a smile at all. That’s a cover up for some deeply rooted pain.

@what Acid in some cases is not safer than weed, only downside to weed is panic/anxiety attacks for some people. acid on the other hand 1 bad trip could really mess up a person mentally and that’s of they survive. There’s been many cases of people taking their own life cuz of a bad trip. You don’t ever hear crazy stories about someone doing something like that off of weed

@jesse j sevilla I’m sorry that you misunderstood my statement, but look again. I said that of the two vices I struggled with, detoxing from meth was harder than pills, in MY experience. I’m not knocking anyone’s struggle.

Meth vs LSD.. the ignorance, LSD If used correctly can be a very spiritual and fulfilling experience. Meth sounds like your constantly wired with euphoria with terrible come downs and massive addiction.

@Football Factory it is. I did both and the spiritual awakening from lsd is overrated though. I mean it can be a good thought disruptor, especially for obsessive thoughts. Can render your worldview more flexible. I really prefer mushrooms for that tho.
Meth is fun but feels like you’re a hamster running in its wheel if you take slighty too much. Thats the thing with methamphetamine: super hard to dose. If properly administered it can be therapeutic for ADHD (less bad effects than Aderall for sure, very close to dexedrine/vyvanse)

But not arguing that more often crystal make ppl violent and addicted, I saw a.girl last week picking her skin cause she believed she had meth mites. It’s extremely scary to witness.

they are showing addiction as it is,a very cunning disease.Its not his fault they have no control over the drugs,his job is just to show it as it is.
I doubt Shami will make it,cos you can never do it for your kids,if you arent doing it for yourself,dont bother trying to quit,carry on till you go half mad,end up in jail etc,something to really jar you into realising you cant possibly continue on the wretched path.Im grateful I went to jail so I could quit.

I feel as if they had a conversation before hand and knew she was going to use before going into rehab, so they probably asked if they could get it on film and she probably even mentioned the spot where they always used at. Also, you could look at it as facing the routine and saying goodbye to it as she’s gonna hopefully start a new life and never see that spot again. It’s all about how you frame it.

I agree. However I just don’t understand why people try these dangerous drugs for the first or second time prior to getting addicted? I say this as someone who grew up in a dysfunctional home and experienced abuse as well as trauma. I have depression and while that has been a barrier to me doing many things I’ve never felt the urge to self medicate. I saw the effects of drugs to an extent while growing up and it terrified me. Like you say maybe we just don’t get it.

Addiction is pretty difficult to explain if you don’t suffer from it because from the outside, in the later stages of addiction, it just looks like self-harm. From my own experience and those of my friends, it kind of starts off as fun but ultimately it’s usually due to self-medicating an underlying psychological problem. In my case I used alcohol to combat shyness. When I realised it worked I then used it constantly until it became habitual, like eating meals at certain times of day or whatever. After that stage it does become self-harm because you hate yourself for being reliant on it without addressing the original problem. The majority of addict’s experiences (and I mean this only in my own personal experience, I’m not speaking for everyone) follow a tediously similar trajectory. At some point you start to lie, thieve, cheat and do whatever is necessary to keep up the addiction but also you retreat to try and conceal it and lie about that. It goes in a vicious circle: you hate that you’re doing it but it’s the only thing you know now and it makes you feel ok for a short amount of time, then you realise all the pain you’re causing and you hate yourself so you do it again to numb the pain, and on and on goes the cycle.

My honest advice to anyone who has a friend or relative suffering from addiction is to turn your back. Honestly, nothing you can do can help them. They will lie and steal from you and abuse you. I know it sucks and goes against all your instincts but they can only help themselves if they want to. Direct them to medical professionals but that is the best that you can do, anything else is deleterious.

@Donald Beetlestone Slow and Go is what it is called in slang. Because the SLO is heroine or fentanyl that slows you down and the GO is Meth that makes you move fast. The deadend speedball. It doesn’t get much harder to quit. I guess you could throw in benzos and alcohol but with just ice and heroine/fentanyl you are pretty screwed already. It’s a slippery slope.
