I’m the person who hated painkillers but became a food addict after a deployment. I wear my addiction. Getting help finally. Weight isn’t coming off but I have more peace and less anxiety than I have ever experienced in my 54 years. Addictions suck. And by the way I heard a pastor say ALL people have an addiction of some type. Might not be a substance either. It might be a feeling or a perception.
He has left out that most pre addicts do not feel happy in their natural state of mind. Situational depression from life losses, poverty and illnesses cause people to fill the empty with drugs to elevate their mood. Bored, lonely, alone contributes to taking drugs fir relief from being so unhappy.
He does bring it up when talking about Stress Reaction and early development.

T. to be honest, im doing pretty badly! my life is very literally like a day in the life of “Groundhog Day”- I relapse because of an overwhelming craving to use drugs- a craving that feels not like a hungry person’s craving for ice cream, but more like a drowning person’s craving for air…..the relapse leads to a ever worsening uncontrollable use of chemicals that now creates health problems where I am on. the brink of death with a couple of weeks, as well as emotionally and physically miserable all of the time and unable to stop. I am lucky in that so far I have managed to get to a detox before death…… !!!! help?

I never truly understood my father’s addiction until I saw this talk. @Jo Goodedon’t give up I know it might seem overwhelming. Ive been struggling with addiction for 25yrs but I’ve been clean for 8 months. It’s a battle everyday.but it gets better I had to cut ties with everyone is know including family.but I wanted to try being sober and I put my faith in the lord and he’s been blessing me daily.

Good vibes are the best medicine. When in rehab and miserable, I was lucky to be there with some funny, cool people. It really helped, I even got a few laughs in while feeling terrible, and man laughter is a potent cure for depression

@Frankko V one thing he mentions at the very end which I think is a very important part of recovery is the spiritual part. I’m not sure what your religious beliefs are but I am a follower of Jesus. The Bible is a great resource and full of so many promises. The Holy Spirit helps us to live the life God has for us. That’s why so many people who do well in recovery turn around and help others. That’s what brings us joy….caring for others instead of always thinking of ourselves and our own needs. I hope you find joy and peace in life. smart recovery meetings helped me feel normal. zoom is great. some groups better than others depending on who takes it and whos in it.
Right there with you. I will have 3 years off H on Christmas and yet my mind seems to be in a worse place then it was in the heat of the battle. Its a sad day when you come to realize that your brain is forever changed but we must push on and we must fight to heal or minds in any way we can. I love you from one addict to another and just know that we’re all in this fight together.

I was able to overcome my addictions once I recognized that I was also dependent. Physical dependency and addiction are very very different and require different approaches. I find it tragic that most recovery modalities link the two as the same because I think many would be way more successful quitting drugs and alcohol if they did what I did. I am now not even tempted to get high or drunk / I prefer to be sober and clearheaded which is a miracle if you knew me 8 years ago.
