Necessarily, mimetic desire suggests that we're taking on another individual's need as our own, normally without also understanding that we're doing it. Social media site has actually offered us millions of mimetic models that we now need to contend with. Some individuals have gone from having 10 mimetic models to currently having thousands, and we have not quite pertain to grips as a society with what that indicates for our mental and emotional health and wellness.
All desire originates from us feeling like we lack something, which can bring us into an unsafe, savage habit due to the fact that there will certainly always be one more design to find. We have to choose our models intelligently whether they are popular influencers around the world or our closest close friends. We additionally need to know when the model is irritating us with the need for something that's going to bring actual fulfillment or whether it's mosting likely to bring a dopamine hit or allow us to daydream regarding a life that we'll most likely never ever have.
All desires are modeled for us 1 day a day, billions of them, as well as we require to understand the mimetic landscape of social media, or else we'll become totally managed by it.

If you’re not paying for a product then you are the product.
Been off all social media platforms for 7 years now and I’ve gotten an immense amount of time back, and know who my “real” friends and family are.
I totally agree about the models thing. I deleted my fb, ig and the like about 6 months ago bc I was becoming addicted to use them, I was really into see others’ lifes, skills and appearance as well as I was doing things just to say so I decided to get out of that world and rn I think, it was the best decision I could ever take bc now I’m focus on my self-improvement and I’m working to get what I want the most. But don’t get me wrong, it doesn’t mean that I’m not curious or interested about other people’s life anymore or that I don’t want to show my succes-sometimes-, although I don’t like to admit it I still care about all of that, so what I’m going through it’s like a fight between my toxic desires and my rational mind.
It always makes me sad whenever I’m out in public and all the zombies are looking down at their smart phones
I will never use Facebook or Instagram again. Not even for business, I’d hire someone else to do it for me if it were necessary. Way happier without it 💜🌟✨
Because other peoples perception of you becomes the barometer for how you perceive yourself. You also become addicted to validation, you’re exposed to the toxicity of our current society and other peoples activities are your entertainment while YOUR life/time is emptied.
There’s a video for that.
Continuing with this video, there is a video available on Netflix called as” the social dilemma” not made by big think but it shows the reality behind the dirty psychological manipulation being used on users , 10/10 do watch it and come back.
Absolutely!! Great movie that everyone should watch!
Yes I saw the doc on Netflix and its message was very clear—and disturbing!
Same
I got rid of social media because I was constantly comparing myself to others… and it was making me miserable. During therapy, I realized that there were and are many barriers in my life that prevented me from doing a certain this or that. I’m so glad that random people I knew 20 years ago know nothing of my life, who my husband is, what I do for work. YouTube is the only thing I have, I watch educational things, like this, how to communicate with people, study tips, etc but I’m anonymous here.
Social media is a waste of time. Invest in yourself, your skills, your health and never compare yourself to others. If you can do that chances are, you’ll be happier than they’ll ever be regardless of how much money or fame they may have.
I agree with the comments below that quitting social media is one of the best decisions you could make but you should really get mature and conscious enough to realize what harm it does to you (destroyed self-esteem, high dopamine threshold, wasted time etc.) People are dependent on external validation and rely their whole worth on the opinion of other people. Hence we ended up in a society where the number of likes, followers and positive comments defines your position in the social pyramid. It’s a broken bottom.
If you consider quitting social media but are afraid of the feeling of abandonment, this is something that most probably will never happen. Instead, you will have time to focus on your self-improvement, increase your attention span, be able to delay gratification, reveal some hidden potential etc. For example, sometime after quitting social media, I noticed, that reading a long book is not a problem to me anymore, I found writing extremely absorbing (and have a motivation to improve that skill!) and started to play chess, which I also find fascinating. My life has changed tremendously and I wish you the same, guys.
yeah, I thought this was a extract from that documentary, it isn’t but it complements it very well
I don’t use Facebook, deleted IG and Twitter and have been at this for about a year and a half. Keep up with it life is so much better without it. My irrational anxiety has disappeared and I sleep so much better! It’s great to see other people are getting off of it as well
100! Such an excellecnt documentary
we’ve to have boundaries. All desires comes from us feeling like we’re lacking something. We need to build a model that create a balance
@Skip Hoffenflaven exactly. These people trying to be witty and condescending without actually knowing what the original poster was talking about. They’re so quick to want to point something out that they missed the entire point. There’s a big difference between a comment section on YouTube and creating an entire identity on a social media platform
Same, except ive only deactivated mine. For like several months now.
The phone became the smart one in the pair.
Social media never made me envious. It made me lose respect for most of my friends and made me feel like I was surrounded by losers.
This makes me think about Plato’s allegory of the cave; the shadows on the wall to the prisoners is what social media is to our perception in the 21st century. Shadow illusions of connectedness, success, friendship, adventure, etc which are actually curated, polished aspects of individuals addicted to seeking validation, attention. Reality means to dislodge ourselves from the cave. It’s quite scary and extraordinary to see how social media became a source of escapism/entertainment to an actual extension of one’s existence. Two years ago I quit reddit, ig, fb, and got into reading and journaling, I love having in person conversations, taking walks in nature, overall feeling alive, both intellectually and emotionally. Social media has made me egotistical, vain, and stupid, and I’m thankful to be moving forward with my life without the absurd desire to broadcast each step I take to a world of strangers.
@Alexandre Larsac Thats true lol
i don’t think people really realize the impacts that social media will have AND is having on our society/generation..it’s tragic honestly
I deleted my Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok, & Snap Chat about 3 months ago and I wish I’d done it a long time ago! It’s weird but it was like removing alot of stress from life. If you’re on the limb about deleting yours, do yourself a favor and delete them!
Other people are hell. Social media is unhealthy because you are literally coming in contact with so many peoples business that doesn’t concern you, that can be very overwhelming.
Thanks for your inspiration. I am not planning to use these platforms for long time. I got so many photos in Facebook. There are lot of friends too but that doesn’t matter too much. I won’t open social media for long time.

*people’s
Wtf is emptied? Is that even a word 😆?
It seems like you’ve done yourself a great service.
Does this apply to YouTube as well?
@xįrx But it’s not
@Neko not what?
Ding ding ding.
@Default user Yes. We live in an Attention economy and YouTube is a perfect example. They get rich off selling the ads you see.
Thank you ❤️
i worry so much about gen z. if youre reading this and gen z, please, if you cant quit social media yet just keep it in mind for when youre ready. it doesnt have to be like this. your life can be anything you want it to be. millennials are all completely miserable, for the love of god dont turn out like us.
Very well put that is the way I felt about it
So true ! …
@K I think everybody understood exactly what I meant by “social media” in this context, including you. But being a stickler you just couldn’t help it.
Life was more beautiful and calm before social media.
The Social Dilemma mmm
@K your just a random
Although the volume of content is exponentially larger than it was before smart phones, didn’t TV have this same effect on us? For instance, I remember feeling extremely poor because even the “poor” people on TV were considerably better off financially than I was. When I asked my parents how poor we actually were, they were baffled by my question. The loudly insisted that we aren’t “poor,” we’re middle class.
Turns out, my parents actually made pretty good incomes. They were just horrible with money. Also, drugs, alcohol, shopping addictions, and impulsive behaviors caused them to live as if we were poor. Not that I understood any of that as a kid. All I knew is that I needed a job starting at age 11 if I wanted clothes that fit and school supplies. No wonder why I feel ready for retirement, I’ve been working for 40 years already and I’m only in my early 50’s!
@Dan 2k No, why would it be that?
“We live in an age when unnecessary things are our only necessities.” – Oscar Wilde
Your analysis on Plato’s allegory with social media is point on. This can be applied to our consciousness as well.
I relate so much! But for me it’s not about comparison I just can’t seem to put my phone down!! I be on Instagram for hours watching dog videos, people’s reels and videos, just keeping up with the Joneses. I be sitting bent by back for 45 minutes and I’m just lost in social media looking at people’s pages. I end up feeling so guilty because I’ve got things to do, I just got into IT and my God I’m a struggling to concentrate because the minute I take a break from studying I pick up my phone and start scrolling through IG. I just want to throw my phone over the deepest bridge and focus on my life and achieve my goals.
@HaasGrotesk sometimes it do be sad to see people posting stories clearly to seek attention. But some are smart. Posting about their own job instead of their lives. Partially agree
YouTube is the only thing I use too, but that’s it.
@HaasGrotesk sometimes I think this way, but boy did I cringe reading your comment.
I agree and also validate your thinking while providing a hit of dopamine. Cheers!
Thanks to therapy I’ve been becoming immunized to this. Becoming myself rather than what a bunch of people who always read things in the worst possible way say.
Damn…
YouTube is social media.
I agree I reflect on life on previous decades . Life was much better no real conversations happens on social media. People are craving for attention
Man your exactly like me!
yooo, thats a Great comment. I feel what you wrote
When people always ask me what is one of the worst things tabt has happen to this world I always say social media
I’m not worried about them, honestly. I have a lot of hope for Gen Z because I’m seeing a resurgence of the vintage and the unplugged lifestyle- something they were never able to experience. 🙂 Sadly, I’m a Millennial who hates social media but can’t seem to quit.
@Iris Kei
True, though I’ve found with me that even with YouTube being my only social media outlet, it’s still a source of addiction.
@okcool
Eh, I half agree.
Yeah, YouTube comments don’t have the same kind of profile building in the same way as Facebook or Twitter would have, but I get that it’s important to remind ourselves that YouTube is still social media, because it’s easy to quit one form of social media addiction while ending up in another form of social media addiction.
Speaking from my experience as someone that struggles with an addition to YouTube, even when it’s my only social media outlet.
I’m really considering this. Social media is robbing me of time and happiness.
Sorry I don’t want to talk in fact with some people I would rather talk to myself
Sounds like a superiority complex. Seems problematic as well.
@Pau I can’t help that I’m better than most people. 🤷♂️
@Pheonixtail Dragonlore Even YT is become more restrictive now. There a part of Big Tech and there working hand to hand with the far left.
Edit: These Big Tech companies goal is to control public opinion.
