Do you have high blood glucose degrees although you're not taking in dietary sugar? Today we're going to discuss why this might be happening..
In this scenario, the sugar is really originating from your liver and kidneys. There is something called gluconeogenesis, which is the formation of brand-new sugar. Your body always requires a very percentage of sugar, however your body can make this sugar out of non-carbohydrate resources. It can make it out of fat, healthy protein, and also ketones. Insulin controls this process. It's expected to shut off gluconeogenesis..
When you have high blood sugar, yet you're not taking in any sugar, this might imply that you have very low quantities of insulin in your body. Your insulin might actually be as well reduced. Insulin resistance is a condition that can trigger you to not have sufficient insulin..
With insulin resistance, you have high degrees of insulin, yet that insulin is not working in the body, and it's not shutting down gluconeogenesis. It may be best to concentrate on improving insulin resistance..
Exactly how to aid improve insulin resistance:.

Exactly what I am facing now….thank you so much doc…..and m relieved to know that this blood sugar won’t cause any further problem. 😊😊
Took about 3 years to fix my insulin resistance. Did everything he recommended. Feel great now!
Thank You!
I am facing this exact problem now. Having cut carbs for almost two months, my morning fasting sugar yo-yo up and down. I am going to keep moving forward and hope it will improve overtime.
Your videos are always so timely. I was doing well and than I wasn’t. Fasting blood glucose shot back up over 100 after being in the low 90’s. Anything under 100 seems to have vanished and I have been doing the keto regime. Thank you for your informative video. You are my “go-to” doctor on YouTube.
Same problem for many of us but i figured that if it took me years to get diabetes it would take some time to reverse it. The good news is that it can be done. Just need to stay focused on this goal. Thanks for the info once again.
Thanks. Good info and answers a question I had. Several years ago I did a 30 day water only fast. I was amazed that it took nearly two weeks for my blood sugar to drop into normal ranges. I quit the fast at 30 days because I was feeling really wonky and my blood sugar was down to 42 and given the possible 20 point acceptable error range of glucose meters it might have been even lower.
“It takes time.” Yes, that’s helpful. Four months on a keto diet likely will not erase decades of massive carb and sugar consumption. My fasting blood sugar is higher than I would like but I’ve lost 40 pounds, lots of belly fat, and I’m off of my 4 blood pressure meds.
Dr Berg is a tremendous help to me as I try to regain optimal health. We are all slightly different in our makeup, for me tinnitus is thrown into the mix raising my cortisol levels perpetually. It’s been a slow decline but LCHF and fasting has helped considerably. Thank you Dr Berg!
Thank you for this video Dr Berg! My A1C had increased from 5.9 to 6.1 and I didn’t understand how that could be. I’ve been doing healthy keto since Sept (it was a re-boot). I’ve lost 14lbs since then. I do not take my B/S…so not sure what it’s running and insurance won’t cover a meter/strips/lancets cause I’m what they say pre-diabetic. So the Dr said to increase physical activity and lower the carbs. (So that’s what I’ve been doing being on Keto/OMAD/IF 22/2 I’m a slow eater ) My blood work showed many of my numbers have decreased since January’s bloodwork except for the A1C, and cholesterol, but that did decrease from 226 to 216 since January, so this I KNOW…KETO WORKS and I am excited to see the majority of levels are in the NORMAL range! 🙂 So will continue RIDING THE WAVE! I did order the Blood Sugar Formula, so just waiting for it to arrive!
Very interesting. Thanks for this. I’m a type 1 (lada) and have noticed this process in my body for a while now. I always wondered why my blood sugars would sometimes increase without eating carbs. I knew about protein gluconeogenesis but I didn’t know about fat and ketones doing that. Right now on a keto diet I take about 25 units of Lantus and 25 units of Novolog a day. Obviously I see a direct increase in my weight the more insulin I have to take a day. I used to be at closer to 150 units a day total and have lost 25 pounds since doing keto in a year, which is the most I’ve ever lost. I’ve plateaued a bit though. Is there an amount of insulin I should try and keep my intake under to achieve better weight loss? I can not go completely without it but I can try and diminish it as much as possible. I also have a CGM so I know my blood sugars in real time. Thanks.
So glad you found the video helpful!
Excellent timing for this well-communicated information, Dr. Berg! It deescalated some anxiety about my borderline higher fasting glucose levels even though I’ve been consistently very low carb, clean eating and fasting over the past 18 months. Keeping an eye on insulin levels which are good but it’s easy to forget about the damage done to insulin receptors over decades eating according to the heavily promoted propaganda from the FDA. It’s so maddening when I think about the effort I put into maintaining a high carb low fat, mostly vegetarian diet based on trusting the source of information even with all the suboptimal lipid and inflammatory test results over decades. Ugh! However, since getting into a Keto/fasting lifestyle, I have hope and the numbers are proof of reversing longstanding ailments that baffled docs without ever mentioning metabolic disease due to misinformed diet, some quite remarkable improvements. Advent blessings to you and your family!
eat a decent amount of calories from animal products, if you are a guy try 3000+ and if you’re a girl try 2500-3000. When you eat enough calories from fat blood sugar shouldn’t drop that often.
@rjrnj1 true… which I why I wait until 11 or so to check mine- before I break my fast..
this is my situation, fasting blood sugar ranges between 95 and 110.
however a1c just tested and is at 5.5, so I’m not too worried. all other tests are normal.
1.5 years on keto and OMAD, down 90 lbs, only 3 lbs till goal of 185, my service weight 45 years ago ! by the way the hardest part of keto and IF was the family. they all think i’m crazy and killing myself, even in the face of success. videos like yours are very encouraging.
@Glenn Beck maybe..😂😂
Thank you Dr. Berg! You answered those very questions which were running through my mind. What a relief!
Just keep up doing the good things, the first 3 or 4 months are really rough but by the 4 month you will see significant improvement. It can take many months to get over IR, even longer depending on how many years your body has been in an IR state.
Good video. This exactly represents my situation. Even while fasting my glucose can stabilize at a high level. However, at 2:07 you mention that those “natural” glucose levels are not pathological. On what is this based? I ask because my reflex is to use insuline to lower my glucose level but very often it has me crash and forces me to break fasting. If that “natural” glucose level is not detrimental, i will let it run its course naturally instead of forcing it down.
@Chris McCaffrey 👍🏿👍🏿
Hi, Dr. Berg you really explained it very well, hopefully I can get the diabetes situation under control and increase my weight -loss since I have been doing Keto and some fasting since 2018, Thank you.
How high were your sugars at their worst?
I am not yet on Keto but eat lots of lean protein and veggies and my sugars are still at 300, I am so worried. I also am on blood pressure meds
@MondoManDevout I’ve been on keto for nearly a year. At my physical last Jan. my fasting glucose level was 69. I went back and looked at my physical fasting glucose levels and in the last 10 years they were all but once in the low 100s–so high. One time I had a non-fasting glucose test and it was 193. And it was many years ago that I had an A1C test and it was 6.6 and yet never a concern about diabetes.
Last week I did my first 72 hour fast and each day my blood glucose measured at 100 or just higher. This morning after having fasted for 16 hours it was 113 (I had been up for hours) and an hour after eating it was 125.
So, I am concerned along with now having numbness in the toes on both feet. I will contact my dr. about getting an A1C test.
I have read online about a keto diet also causing diabetes.
Thank you so much. Has Dr berg recommended an alternative to nutritional yeast for B vitamins in case it’s not available to us.
keep working on the i went from 6.5 to 5.7 to 5.2. now 4.8. you can do it
Did you still have high blood sugars even if you didn’t eat carbs/sugar?
@April Garcia yes, because of too much protein. Protein will convert to sugar if you eat too much. About 6oz was normally enough. Apple cider vinegar helped a lot. 3 tablespoons in quart of water with 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt. Drink anytime during the day, especially around mealtimes.
I have the same issue here, and jm pregnant. I don’t take in any fork of sugar, and eat low carb, znd my sugar is still high.
Has keto still been working for you?
So useful information shared in this video. My mom and dad do not consume sugar at all and are low in carbs, still sugar level in the morning is over 90. Thank you so much!
Your numbers look a lot like mine
I’ve been IF and omad for almost a year no sugar or starches or PUFAS ever,
@the beautiful good awesome. do you have an update to share?
Omg Dr Berg I was looking for answers as to why although extremely sugar and carb conscious my blood sugar is still a bit high! I considered insulin resistance but had no way of connecting the two until finding your video today!!! Thank you for being a Dr. who truly knows and understands how the human body functions!
Try taking measurements later in day , avoid dawn phenomenon xx
Sounds like me! Been doing IF for 6 months, limiting carbs, but my glucose remains high- especially during the day. I know this will take time to reverse but it’s frustrating. Thanks for this video, Dr. Berg.
Thank you for sharing how long it took you to fix IR. I am over 6 months carnivore and consumed with why my blood glucose has gone up. Head scratcher, but seeing your words helped!
3 years is way too long !
@MondoManDevout Look up carnivore diet quickly!
@James Konakowitz Hello.. may I ask how long it took you and if you measured your HOM IR? I would be very grateful for an answer. 🙏👍☺️
@Mariam Adnan not sure about alts from dr berg for vit b but you can get vitamin b supplements, make sure there not synthesized. nuts and seeds are high in vitamin b, google for specifics and of course many foods are high in vit b
Thank you Dr. Eric, this video has answered my worries. I have been on OMAD since January this year, l lost a significant number of kgs. and have seen improvement in my A1C, dropping to 5.3, but I was worried about my BG spikes, especially in the morning hours. But after this video, I am grateful. No going back to Carbs!!!
Thanks
