Lumbar Medial Branch Block & Ablation for Back Pain: Dr. Matthew Neumann, The Spine Center

Arthritis in the lower back causes lower back pain, sometimes even radiating into your buttocks and thighs. Lumbar Medial Branch Block is a diagnostic procedure that determines if a patient is a candidate for treatment. These tests see if your pain is coming from arthritis in your lumbar facet joints. If this injection provides relief, you are a candidate for a lumbar radiofrequency ablation. This procedure is a non-surgical nerve burn, which disrupts the signal of pain. The relief from this procedure lasts much longer than a steroid injection, up to 6-18 months. The nerve will grow back and the procedure can be repeated as needed. These are outpatient procedures done under local anesthesia.
