Lunge is stepping and lunging. Split Squats is slightly different.

The whiny comments are hilarious. Yes, these are split squats and no, they will not damage your knees if done correctly. If you do a lot of regular heavy squatting and deadlifting and have issues with hip pain/mobility you should absolutely introduce a few sets of these once a week.
How come when i so split squats/bulgarian splits, my BACK LEG feels like its doing most of the work??

It means your joints arent lubricated enough. If you arent doing a warm up every time do that, and if you already are, spend 5 minutes on the treadmill as soon as you get to the gym.

incorrect upward movement. supposed to have no knee movement and have the hip follow through forward, not extend backwards as you stand up

Lol just elevate the working foot better if the heel is elevated at the same time and put a towel on the floor and make your rear foot slide back when j go deep into it and slide it back up
I tried the bulgarian squat years ago. Would not recommend it to anyone. Very easy without correct form to injure yourself. Yes, I did injure myself.🏋️🏋️
The coaching cues were fine the only issue (and it’s a major one) is the split squat should emulate stride/gait mechanics. Having the feet wide apart is totally dysfunctional and can cause a lot of issues with hip alignment and groin injuries. Feet should be in line or semi inline

There’s a variation to these I use for sprinting. It involves printing the trail leg in a closer to the body and instead of just concentrating on pushing with the front leg (working primarily the front quad and hamstrings), you push through the balls of your trail leg and foot simultaneously to get hip extension and glute contraction as well. Great transition for running and in particularly sprinting.
