This series is hilarious, I love this show, and I think your reactions are fun
I’m excited to watch!
Im glad I’m not the only one who thought that the sperm cells looked freaky 🦇
“Whoever created Cells at Work was smoking a few things before doing this one.”
Hey Doc: Virtual High Five!
This ep made me feel bad for “overworking” my blood cell for nothing 😅
I really appreciate Cells at Work: Code Black. Not only is it really educational but also it kinda forces you to be more aware of what kind of lifestyle you have and how it affects your body. And as always, I really enjoy your reactions to these, Dr. Hope! 😀
Love cells at work and this channel makes it even better, that being said after every episode of Code Black I feel like I have to apologize to my body for the emotional turmoil my cells have gone through due to my uni lifestyle
But you missed out the most emotional part when they learn that the sperm are probably never going to fertilise anything
It be fun to imagine what a female egg cell would be depicted as, as well as periods and what a terrible time it is for the red blood cells.
“Make sure the sperm duck things with human faces don’t go in the bladder.” Lol. These chapter titles are always top tier!
NO idea how you’ll be able to tackle the next episode with a straight face, but I’m ready to see you try
I’m currently waiting for your face masks to arrive! I bought one for me, and one for my sister who works in a children’s hospital. She can’t wait to make her coworkers jealous!
Having been one of the team originally working on Viagra (although at that time it was just referred to as sildenafil citrate), it was a little sad when the team was disbanded due to some unpleasant side effects when used for its original purpose. The compound was effectively killed off as an R&D project. About a year later, the team was pulled back together again as a few people on the clinical trials had asked to be able to keep taking it as they said it had saved their marriage! I spent the next 5 or 6 years working on this (was a team leader at this point), and wrote a large chunk of the analytical package for the FDA and MHRA filings. Was a great project to work on. Thanks, Dr Hope, for reminding me of that time. Every one thinks that was the biggest drug for Pfizer, but at the time I left, it was only the 6th biggest ( in terms of income).
Oh yes, and I think we’d heard all the jokes long before it was approved for use😁
“Everyone is a little bit depressed about not getting an erection.” – Dr Ed Hope
Ah, the episode where Dr. Hope gives us “The Talk.” My late biology teacher always explained the epididymis as ” a little YMCA where all of the little sperm learn how to swim.” It was nice to essentially see that play out in the episode lol
If it makes you feel better, even in successful pregnancies only one out of tens of millions succeed anyway so 99.99% of sperm cells were doomed to die anyway.
“I love the perseverance of this Red Blood Cell. He is making it his personal responsibility to get that erection. That is dedication to the cause. That is what you want in a wingman.”
This line nearly made me spit out my breakfast laughing.
@Brandon Lyon I think you could add a couple nines at the end there.
Someone already said Cells at Work Black as “guilt trip: the anime”
@Rakhim, Abdul I go out of my way to take fantastic care of my body, and *even I* feel guilty from this anime.
@Martin Drkoš I’m not even sure if their statistic is correct. They could just say one sperm of the group or smtn.
12:47 there’s also the fact that the brain being lowkey upset about it, probably means the dude the cells live in, is himself self consious about needing viagra.
I’m still advocating for a “Cells at Work! Pink” something about the female body. Maybe a red blood cell watching the uterine lining fall like a wall collapsing violently. Maybe the end of the season you see an extended episode on conception and pregnancy. Would be cool.
@TheSpeegy I bet it was awesome and interesting. But, you as a chemist, worked on R&D with only another chemists? Can you pls tell me what other professionals worked with you
@Walisson You’re right, it was pretty awesome (most of the time). As an Analytical Chemist we worked with many other groups including synthetic chemists, pharmacists, statisticians, clinicians, documentation specialists, medical device engineers, I.T. system engineers etc. Both within the company, and with various contract organisations.
Ah Mr Spoogy (oh! silly slip there). Glad to hear you worked on one of the most wonderful drugs (for me). Course you got it wrong – they disbanded it because some bright spark discovered that the molecular weight of sildenafil citrate was 666.6. The mark of the devil if ever I saw it. (only joking)
Detroit looks weird during the Pandemic.
I love how in many episodes, when every cell is celebrating that they got saved by medicine, the brain cell is thinking “yea we got saved, but the fact we needed saving in the first place is pretty bad”. It’s very foreboding to the habit some people have to seek temporary medication to symptoms of an underlying condition that needs much more serious measures.
Yeah dude I smoke tobacco…. this is really making me rethink my life choices.
Cells at Work does a really good job of anthropomorphizing what exactly goes on in the human body, and it shows the struggles that they face day in and out trying to keep the body working as best they can. It’s hard not to get invested in their struggle. There’s also sly criticism of the chronic Japanese work culture in there as well.
My theory about bacteria being “out of proportion” is that they don’t represent a single bacterium, but more of a colony. Such as the last episode where there was one that was bigger than the WBCs.
@BellaSara3346 No, i would not _At All_ be suggesting these for the sake of biological accuracy; that is not the style of this show. (Platelets are fully sentient, RBCs have their “brains” despite being denucleited, germs are ppl-size instead of tiny, etc) -My suggestions would be for the purpose of showing the audience that sperm cells are not “just ducks”, and that they were intended from the beginning to be humanoids riding subs (bc as depicted in the show, we never got a hint toward this).
I myself have my own ideas for how to make the character-designs & storytelling more “biologically accurate”, but for the purposes of this thread, i’m leaving them out.
That was a chapter title?
What they should have done was make the spermatozoa horses with the chromosomes as little jockeys riding on them. Horse racing is big in Japan and stallions are a traditional symbol of male virility, so it fits.
@An On That is a good idea
It also guilt trips you a million by showing cute cells die and the possibility of those baby sperm cells dying
Batman bruh sperm cells always looks scary in real life but here they are well design.
@shiki granbell I agree with your first statement, but that’s the first time Ive seen someone like these designs
Plot twist: they ended up inside another man
@Melanie Szelong You have a libido and gain all sorts of benefits from sex because nature wants you to breed. The purpose of sex is to breed. Life evolved to continue.
@Aquarius Amethyst Well, recreational sex and masturbation tend to be harmful. Pornography is objectively harmful, and sex with multiple persons is objectively harmful. You are technically correct in that frequent sex and/or masturbation is healthy (or not harmful) but the way in which it is commonly done IS harmful.
For the record, there are plenty of things we do which is worse than jacking off or having casual sex. I’m just pointing out technicalities. You want to slut about, that’s your business. You want to smoke, that’s your business. I’m just pointing out that smoking is bad for you.
@Some unsober idiot And….? The more informed a man is about the other side of the equation, the less likely they are to get themselves in a sticky situation. As a “gynecologist”, I’m really surprised that you even sound like you discourage reproductive education of both sexes.
Wow! What a crazy coincidence to have you see this video. That’s an awesome story. Thx for sharing it
I would prefer it not to be called “Pink.” Why stereotype colours?
Other than that, I’m fully on board with your idea. Seeing a spin-off about the female body, with menstruation, pregnancy, etc., would be very interesting!
@Some unsober idiot You’re arguing that boys and men should not be taught how the female body works. I would definitely disagree with that. The more educated people are about human biology and how reproduction, pregnancy, STDs, etc., actually work, the better. It would be beneficial, not detrimental. The more educated young people are about these things, the better!
Your poor cells are trying so hard 😂
@Slook THERE IS?! Omg!!!! I’ve been wanting this! Is there a part about pregnancy?! I REALLY want to see the cells interacting with an embryo!
Thank you so much for your hard work and dedication! I’m not a man, but I can identify with sexual embarrassment, of course, and I know this is such a sensitive condition for men. The psychological impact is profound, and you can try to be optimistic all you’d like, but the truth is that when you feel like you’re somehow dysfunctional, broken, or not good enough, that colors your whole experience of life.
Just the idea that some men have to worry about getting close to or intimate with the people the love because they’re afraid of feeling humiliated and ashamed is heart wrenching to me. Especially if it means they would feel like they’re somehow less than a man.
I could see a problem like this leading to suicidal ideation in some people if it is coupled with other lifestyle struggles. I think it’s not too much of a stretch to suggest that something like viagra saves lives.
@A K I assume there is, but if you want to really go into the embryo, there’s Cells At Work! Baby, which seems to have been translated and published by Kodansha.
Dude same
For sure.
Some big giant woman who embraces the sperm and starts process
@Hoodie Horizon where can I get those books? They’re not on Amazon and I can’t find them on Google (I just get the mainline CAW and a few other spin offs
@Heart Of The Wild there’s a cells at work discord that translates the chapters. They only translated a few chapters so far
@Annalisa Steinnes There could be a love story where she chooses a sperm cell. They fall in love and they embrace, creating a child together…
@RafNavi that’s a relief!!!
…
Kinda… 😐
@UGNAvalon, well, this exact sexual encounter is considered to be bad mostly because it wasn’t possible without viagra, indicating serious problems. And the older cell would tell that this would once happen every day, they probably didn’t take it so serious back them.
The reason they’re anguishing over non-fertilisation sex is probably that this guy can hardly have a boner and is wasting those precious erections. Was he more potent, they’d probably be more carefree :)))
@Michael Schneider Pretty sure the “happen every day” was referring to the morning wood of adolescence.
But yes, i agree that the lament was for having all their hard work wasted (but not solely for the weak erection).
