Perfect timing. I’ve always felt back pain during a DL and DR.
Just now learning about the plate hinge drill you are fkn amazing dude
I have been struggling with low back pain for little over a year now. Today I waited to pull my deadlift until my back was completely stiff and I was aligned up and down. Boom! Pulled 450lbs like it was a warm up. No pain at all! Couldn’t believe it was as simple as making my back as stiff and strong as possible. 500lbs here I come!!
Great content!! However I wish it was that simple….when are you going to upload a video about facet joint pain management?
Hey did you see his recent shirt on Ed Coan’s #1 thing people need to know for lifting? It was to engage the lats (& upper back, I think) to stiffen up really hard before deadlifts.
I think he posted it like 2-3 days ago.
Yes this is the way to do it, a good way to make sure you are ready is to pull the slack out of the bar. If your body isn’t tight you’ll have a hard time with it
One can never go wrong with suggestions from Stu!
@neosapiens yes I did!! That’s what made the difference for me. I am totally addicted to what Squat University has to say. Makes a huge difference.
isnt that Lempuyangan temple?
Same here, stopped deadlifting alltogether because it always caused me pain
Thank you, I’ll be trying this. I’ve injured my lower back 3x this year with deadlift and once with barbell rows
I recently heard my lower back pop during a deadlift and I’ve been recovering for almost a month already. It just really hurts when Laying down for a long time and then finally getting up.
I’m not a doctor but doing good mornings has helped my low back and spinal erectors which raised my deadlift.
I just tried this, it’s life changing
Look up McKenzie exercises. Try not to bend forward only stretch with your spin going backwards. Do cobra pose from yoga ! Or sphinx pose for a warm up about 6-10 sets of 20-30 seconds. Or do reps….. if your legs give out or it hurts to cough you might have a herniated disk
It’s really good activation drill before DLing
@Qendrim Smelaj Mackenzie technique, McGill’s big 3, don’t have any special benefits to them other than just trying to get people to move. Most back pain is nonspecific so it takes overcoming a fear of movement that one most strongly associates with pain which is likely bending over and flexing the spine. Herniated discs also heal on their own with time and most people have at least 1 which are asymptomatic and not dangerous. But yes if one loses bladder or bowel function or there’s a significant motor deficit between sides that’s cause for seeing a doctor right away as that could be cuada equina syndrome
@Parker Miller, CSCS, CISSN I mean they kinda do tho. I agree with everything else. But mckenzies are mainly extension exercises which are commonly used to help with herniated disks.
@Qendrim Smelaj I used to believe the same thing, but from the data I’ve read there’s really no specific exercises or activity that speeds up herniation recovery. It’s more just general movement and activity that seems to be the most important factor for reducing pain and improving quality of life. If those movements (i.e., mackenzie extension flexion) make someone feel good enough to then go do activities afterwards I’m all for their use. But I think just knowing their not inherently unique to speed up the herniation recovery is important. Does that better explain my position?
@Parker Miller, CSCS, CISSN mhm makes sense I’ll look more into it. Since I do work in the field Gotta know this stuff lol
So much hate in the comments for a man just trying to look out for his health 😷
I am a Former Kansas football player and stopped playing sometime in 2017. After all my years of going through sports and lifting and being involved in athletics, I am JUST NOW at the age of 28 actually able to hear my body and had to learn how to correct YEARS of improper/inefficient lifting. Trying to restart my football career but I have SOOOO many issues from when I was younger and deep tissue muscles that are so stiff that I can’t get past certain points of pain and tightness. I fight with it everyday but my advice would be to make sure you guys are learning your body and learning every aspect of the technique in your lifts so you don’t end up like me!! The weight will go up but making sure that technique is superb will make so much more of a difference. These videos help me so much with getting back into my journey. Thank you squat University!!
y’all are the best thing that happened to my fitness life and i feel like donating
Had a back injury for years. Been scared to death of doing dead lifts…
Please create a longer video with more detailed explanation for cause and solution.
@Adam does stuff glad someone said it. SU has a habit of wanting to discourage strengthening the lower back, which is a common issue and runs counter to helping people
Chiropractic manipulation individually doesn’t fix faulty movement patterns. Rehab is definitely the answer for that. Abdominal stability would be solid also. Great job.
Chiropractic probably kept him in pain. Chiropractic is a bunch of quackery.
@lobo53695 I’m only responding to tell you to educate yourself before you voice certainties
This is why I tell people that deadlifts should be considered a leg exercise, not a back exercise.
The Bible says that no one is a good person. We have all broken God’s law the 10 commandments, we have all committed, lies, adultery, idolatry, and blasphemy. We deserve hell, but because of what Jesus did on the cross we can be forgiven. So if you Repent of your sins, change your wicked ways, and put your faith in Christ you will be written in the book of life. 👌 🙏Repentance is reviewing one’s actions and feeling contrition or regret for past wrongs, which is accompanied by commitment to and actual actions that show and prove a change for the better. . . .

I think that’s a bad way to think, because it’s an extremely good back excercise and has cured most of my back pain I’ve had for 20+ years. Deadlift is one of the best back excercises.
@herishmerish It is great for the back, too, yes, but I think of it as legs first.
If you envision deadlifts as back supported squats it will give you optimal form. I was watching a Eddie hall video where he said begin like it’s a leg press and ever since then I’ve had no pain in my lower back and my deadlift shot up instantly
@111kino I will say the dude’s form did get improvement
@CTI not really. Its very minute. He’s just shifted the weight off his lower back even more, which is kinda pointless since conventional deadlifts are mostly posterior chain and he’ll revert back to his previous form when he goes heavy enough, which will bring the pain back. Better fix would be switching to sumo while working on his lower back strength and probably flexibility on the side
@111kino there’s no reason he should switch to sumo if his core is his main weak point
@CTI ? That’s exactly why he should switch. Sumo is easier on the lower back. He can then use that saved up back endurance to do more lower back focused exercises.
Guy learned to lift the hard way
Will these drills help someone with disc degeneration?
@Matt G. Try a hexbar instead my friend
I’d definitely watch that!
This is why you should ALWAYS work on your form.
Every issue with the lower back usually goes back to proper head/neck alignment
Any answers would be appreciated. I think I have a similar situation in this video, but not necessarily lower back pain but I felt more of my engagement with my lower back over my lats which correct me if I’m wrong, you should feel deadlifts and bent over rows the most with your lats and not your lower bank. Also im usually the one who puts form over weight first, so I don’t know if it’s a form problem or a body impairment
Same. Any info would be great
