What creates dependency? Easy, right? Drugs trigger addiction. But perhaps it is not that easy.
This video clip is adjusted from Johann Hari's New York Times very popular publication 'Going after The Scream: The First and also Last Days of the Battle on Medicines.' For more information, and to take a test to see what you learn about dependency, go to www.chasingthescream.com.

i don’t care about your apology video. i care for the message THIS video brings. you know you are right. anyone with an IQ over 100 knows this and hopefully this is the majority of the population. just saying, as an addict.
“The opposite of Addiction is Connection”
Love it!
“The opposite of Addiction is Connection” 💙
There is a lot of truth to this.
However, I’ve read sources that say that when trying to repeat the rat park experiment, there was a percentage of the rats that got addicted. It was a small percentage, but it did happen. And some other re-runs of the experiment got completely different results.
And even though it is true that only a small group of Vietnam veterans came back as heroin addicts, this video overlooks those that turned to alcohol.
you going clean bro
Why was this taken down. This video was very helpful and informative,
The stigma around addiction is so bad in this society, end of last term I wrote a well written persuasive text about destigmatising addiction as I have experienced dependency, withdrawal and rehabilitation. I gave all the facts mentioned in this video, yet my 11th grade teacher emailed my parents for ‘discussing and glorifying drug use’, even tho I gave no specific information about the drugs or their benefits. Even writing the essay I felt so ashamed of being an addict that I made it clear that ‘I have no experience with addiction’, a false clame I felt I was forced to make.
This video helped me more than you can imagine in one of my darkest times. Thank you.
While the original channel was not happy with their research and work on this video, this is still very accurate information you can safely base opinions on. Even their “bad” videos are amazing.
I rushed to watch this video after I saw the “Can you trust Kurzgesagt” video and now I’m watching it a second time after going through the whole drama with Coffe Break. While you are 100% right, not everyone is going to have the common sense of knowing that this, while important info to formulate an opinion, it’s not an absolute truth and the video does not talk about chemical factors being important as well. For example, when he says “it’s not the chemical, it’s your cage” makes it seem as if the environmental/psychological factor is the only/main one, which is not entirely bad, but again, it is misleading and many people make take it as a fact and completely deny the chemical factor. I know it sounds stupid to be so careful, but that’s the responsibility that big channels with a lot of influence have.
Addictions are painkillers for sure and although it would be great to see that so many could just break the cycle (and this video is so on the point) the challenge is the persons self esteem and self worth to believe that other people see them as valuable and want to connect…if the person sees them selves as worthless, no matter how many good people they are around, they may still see that nobody likes them and then push them all away…resulting in feeling alone and then turn back to the addiction, or if they are in a toxic social environment where they think they have a peer group but underneath its full of narcissistic people tearing them to pieces. It so important to sit down with addiction and look at all aspects of a persons life before breaking the cycle as when a person breaks free and then goes back it starts chipping away at their self worth. Thanks so much for this video – Iv shared it to pretty much all my clients!
Thank you Sir. I somehow feel understood even if i hate myself and only drugs can change that…
@~NekoIDreamZz~ its important just to do 1 step at a time…I used to despise myself and was addicted to many things, but since have changed it. You are stronger than you know trust me on that! Start with something that you do like about you no matter how seemingly small it may appear…have you ever stroked a cat or smiled at somebody when you felt down…tiny things add up to huge steps!
i understand why kurzgesagt removed this but it’s still a really fucking good video with loads of valid points.
I’m about to start a research paper on addiction and this was a perfect introductory video. Thank you so much!
As a recovering addict. This mks complete sense to me.
The monster behind addiction is anxiety
I d say is Freedom.
This is only a partial answer. Though, as someone who has gone through several rehab for alcoholism, I can agree with most of what’s in here.
Fulfillment and connection is very important, but let’s not disregard the chemical changes which occur within your brain when neurological pathways are continuously reinforced.
Yes but still missing information about how addiction has to do with the brain and the nucleus accumens.
“what if i can’t live a normal life without it”
“what if ill never be happy without it”
“what if i cant get anymore of it”
“how am i gonna travel/study/other..”
“how am i gonna get out of this”
“what if i cant feel normal without it ever again”
@Soulplexis goddamn right
@shar shark that’s because the left wants to blame addiction on society.
Totally agree, this makes a hell of a lot of sense to me. As soon as I got out of the situation I was in there was no need for alcohol or opiates.
This is exactly how I feel too, individuals struggling with addiction deserve help and a better environment.
Facts
In fucking deed
I think the main point was buried, and that’s why this video got backlash.
Understanding the brain psychology of addiction is how we treat the INDIVIDUAL affliction. Understanding where we lack as a society is how we treat the SYSTEMIC affliction. Folks are still looking at this like, “well this video doesn’t actually tell addicts how to fix themselves” – NO, it explains how EVERYBODY ELSE has a responsibility to shift the narrative around addiction so we can shut down the stigmas that make it infinitely harder to seek the help needed.
A friend shared this video on her fb over 4 years ago . It all finally made sense to me about why I drank alcohol. The video gave me a sense of knowing and understand about myself … I just stopped drinking alcohol… no interest or desire in it … I just walked away from it all by myself … and then started the internal healing on all the parts of me that needed it 🙂🥰
Sure there’s problems with this video, but it was helpful to me at understanding other factors. I don’t think this video is overly manipulative in its narrative
Si
Y’know it’s kind of funny, during the pandemic I joined a friend’s discord server and was there chatting every single day thanks to corona virus shutting down everything and me not being able to socialize with my friends, but when the schoolyear started up again and I could see my friends again I stopped getting on every single day to chat and socialize, because I had friends I could actually talk to and hang out with. I just think it’s interesting about how this very concept can be applied to so many things.
It’s those darn critics
As someone who has taught kids here and there informally, I’ll give you an A and a hug just for thinking about disadvantaged/ depressed ppl in the society
If it is well-written, A+ with the hug
ironically, human connection itself can be addictive, its called codependency and romance – both these things are recognized as behavior addictions
@Synthesized that’s what I’m sayingggg
Did you finish it? Is it something you are able to share?
Their new video’s are subsidized by the European Union, I think it was part of the deal. I can imagine the EU doesn’t like to be told the war on drugs works counterproductive.
It’s not a big deal to cherrypick to show a new and refreshing idea! They should have just said: Could it be, that addiction has more to do with the individual’s life situation, and less to do with the actual substance? Leave it open. Throw the idea in. Let others continue on it.
I personally think it has more to do with almost all their newer video’s being subsidized by the European Union, and they don’t like this view, which also practically says: governments policies to the issue might in fact work counterproductive.
@Chris Vaccaro THANK YOU
@Iván bro i really started an entire youtube argument
@Dichter hence the opposite is connections. Every time im isolated severely, (im talking months with no friends), I end up relapsing on fentanyl
@mister faustus what/ your drug of choice? I feel this so much, mines heroin & fentanyl
@mister faustus what/ your drug of choice? I feel this so much, mines heroin & fentanyl
do you mind sharing this text that you wrote?
@Michelangelo Pe very interesting. I agree with the necessity of rigorous honesty as a key to ending addictive behavior. It seems to me emotional hurt is a motivating factor, impulse control another, and as this video states lack of meaningful connections.
@SIMONE ESPOSITO I think of elvis, Michael Jackson, prince, many others
@Michelangelo Pe
Can you prove that lying and holding resentlment/hatred cause addiction?
Alcohol cant substitute for opiates in the true sense of the addiction ie alcohol wont prevent opiate withdrawal symptoms and opiates cant prevent alcohol tremors. The switching addictions fulfills the psychological distress of the chemical imbalance and exitential anxiety
@Joseph Garrahan I can prove that addiction is the psychology of a liar collapsing addiction rates when the unpublishable truth is published
@Tom They already have a full video on main channel that shows war on drugs is having the opposite effect
This was published at least 5 yrs ago the fact your teacher told you to pull your head in but you said “omg you don’t understand”. Yes yes we do understand you weren’t the following first being born yesterday stop being a goober
