Listen to firsthand from people fighting with opioid dependency and follow the advanced work of medical professionals as well as researchers as they explore why dependency is not a moral falling short, yet a persistent, treatable medical condition.
Easy access to medicines like heroin, fentanyl, and also prescription medications like OxyContin has fueled an epidemic of dependency– the deadliest in united state history. Currently, science is exposing how dependency affects the mind, as well as leading experts are collecting proof about just how we need to address our drug problem, from accepting evidence-based treatments, to rethinking public policies.

Great episode NOVA!!! Thank you for putting this out there & giving everyone the chance to see how hard the struggle truly is!!! The only way to get this information out to the public is to have more shows exactly like this, that humanize the addict & their addiction. The only difference between an addict & a non- addict is brain chemistry and social surroundings. LETS All start HELPING and UNDERSTANDING a bit more… While placing judgment & shame on the addict a BIT LESS!!! The problem doesn’t simply go away because society wants to “look the other way”. Let’s ALL work on showing ALL people compassion ❤️ it’s so simple, yet the very last thing that comes to mind when we think about any person who is a little bit different than us…..
Methadone saved my life! I just celebrated 14 years in recovery and h w successfully tapered off methadone. Now I work at my former program helping other women do the same.
This is the most accurate, honest most informative documentary on addiction that I’ve ever seen. They touched on all forms of addiction and how the brain works. Love it. Thank you for educating our loved ones. It’s not our intention to hurt anyone.
Having a wonderful woman to over dose and watch her being carried in a body bag crushed me. I went back to drinking… Today I am 18 months sober.
It took me 20 years to get clean and sober. Live in treatment programs, the 12 step program, ADHD medication and counselling helped me achieve it. 22 years sober and 18 years clean this year!
Heartbreaking episode. It’s correct in the US, treatment facilities are everywhere but insurance (if you have a job that offers a decent plan) usually covers some but not all charges. The charges are obscene. 10’s to 100’s of thousands…so someone who doesn’t want to burden a family with that crushing debt is put in an impossible position (plus if you can’t pay, most places won’t even consider allowing you in). It doesn’t help fix the problem and leaves things as the status quo…aka, the addictions remain.
The recovery/rehab sites that do take insurance like Medicare or Medicaid are basically detox centers. You get to be isolated and go through cold turkey withdrawals. They may be better than nothing, but they don’t often allow much beyond a detox. Addiction is still looked at as a weakness for the feeble-minded who couldn’t handle the stresses of life. It’s web spreads over every race, religion, age range and income level. It’s happy to take the souls of anyone within its grasp. It will not let go, it will not give back control, it will severely skew priorities and kill ones soul and ability to function. Yet, people are still shunned and stigmatized, etc.
It’s a killer.
This is such an eye opening documentary. Completely changed my mind about drugs, addictions and addicts. I have empathy for addicts now. We should levy heavy fines and taxes on big pharma. They should be made to pay for the clean-ups.
what a beautiful yet raw documentary. Props to the production team… music, edit and peoples stories were spot on
I have addiction in my family. Knowing this helped me make decisions pre and post operations. One of my docs wanted me on a certain dosage of a pain meds, narcotic or opioid. I said give me the smallest dosage, I have addiction in my family and I want an alternative, Tylenol Advil ibuprofen. He completely understood and promoted me not taking it after 48 hours
Addiction is also denying those that NEED pain medication. It took a year for liver cancer to kill my beautiful sister Lisa and she had to fight MONTHLY to get the medication she needed to ease her suffering. The last few weeks in hospice she was FINALLY given what she needed to pass relatively pain free. I miss her every day💔
As a former heroin addict who made it out the other side after years of homelessness, methadone, suboxone, and rehabs, you have to want it. You have to want to be free. A lot of people just don’t have that desire for more. The pull is too strong.
😊👍🌟
Wow. This video came out the same day I decided to get sober. Been drinking everyday for 7 years straight but now I am two weeks clean. Wish me luck! 🤞
This is a very good documentary. Thank you for talking about this and bringing it to people’s attention
Each day is a blessing! Congrats & Never give up fighting. You are all doing something that takes so much strength! 💗
Great documentary! I’m a recovering alcoholic and lots of people don’t know how dangerous alcohol withdrawal is. In my view it’s a horrible drug, even more so than others because it is readily available and dirt cheap, at least in my country. You can get half a litre of distilled sugar cane water, which is 50% alcoholic, more than vodka, for 20 cents. My last withdrawal, three years ago, i had such bad seizures I bit a piece of my tongue off. Pray for addicts, it isn’t a choice after a while. I drank just to keep my body from shutting down. And in recovery come the questions like why I used the way i did. Very tough, it’s like having a little devil in my mind always telling me it’d be a great idea to drink again. Everyday is a struggle.
I was badly addicted to OC’s more than 10 years ago (2003-2010). Took me 7 trips to detox and many, many attempts to stop until I finally got control. Fortunately, I never touched heroin or anything else…but it was just as bad. $400 a day. When you’re addicted to opiates, you’re not alive, you just exist. Your true self…who you really are is gone forever. Even though I’ve fully recovered and living a “normal” life, I’ve never been the same. Who I was died when I went through that addiction.
Methadone saved my life, I was a severe opiate addict with heroine being my drug of choice. I’ve been in recovery since 2007. I also used subutex and that’s a great tool as well. MMT is a amazing thing if the addict is ready and uses it correctly.
I had open heart surgery last year and went against doctors advice, and used THC instead of opiates. I would have been a hopeless addict if I’d taken what was prescribed to me.
I really like the concluding part and statements of this documentary. It seems like these professionals are opening a door that says “You’re not yet gone forever. There’s still hope for you, buddy.” Thanks to this faith-based treatment facility. Indeed, for with God, nothing shall be impossible.
Bravo 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
One of *THE MOST* thorough documentary on addiction… touching up on the actual scientific aspect of it; which is very important.
For a short film — this was *FANTASTIC* 💯👏🏻👏🏻
it’s not the drug that is dangerous , its the subconscious shadows that came out of the woods once u stopped that are scary to face . Nothing else …do you know the reasons of your addiction ?
I love how they looked into the desease of addiction in detail!!! Amazing if more people would love addicts and be there for them unconditionally!!!
Congratulations!!! So awesome.
Wonderful to hear that….
i watched a buddy figure this one out: just go to the ER, and if they try to kick you, threaten suicide. put him in psyche ward with meds, regardless of insurance status.
@Lotus Relic then that person will be billed for the stay which will probably be close to $10,000 for 3 days. I have insurance and even I have to threaten suicide to be admitted to a treatment facility.
@SCO1 DAZZA NAh YOU should TOTALLy judge..Good judgement is the best survival skill.. xxxx🌐🌏🌎🌎
I get grand mal seizures if I don’t have valium
Hang in there man. I don’t know you, but I want you to be good, healthy and happy. One day at a time. One day at a time.
No.because I know people that need those meds and I know people that have been on them for years and their not on the streets taking whatever.it depends on the person.i do think addiction should be treated but not everyone does that
Stay strong
🙏
Natalie
What country are you from.?
I pray for strength for you.

It’s not the fault of pharmaceutical companies! It’s the fault of the individuals who chase the high instead of using them to control the pain as intended. I have been using them to control the pains caused by many surgeries after helicopter accident for more than ten years without any problems bc I don’t take more to chase the high. Matter of fact After the first month or two; I don’t feel any highs. But it significantly lessons my pain! Pls read my comment. Is it the fault of the auto makers when people who drive sometimes crash and get injured or die? Of course not; it’s the fault f those who use the cars. So what’s the difference here?
You were able to get ADHD meds after having a substance abuse issue?
@Pauline Galloway please don’t spread false information. Some states will do this. However, places like Washington kick them to detox on the street and after they have been clean for 3 days, they will help.
When I got clean with MMT 16 years ago I literally worked a second job to pay for it- in ’07 it was 77$ a week. NOW here in Virginia MMT is covered by Medicaid. However, some of the people who need this the worst (felons etc) can’t get the benefits because they are felons. When people see that mile long line at the clinic @7am don’t judge it- cuz somewhere in the line is somebody who will succeed -like I did. I’ve got the 2 car garage and the good job because of methadone then and now suboxone. Suboxone maintains my damaged brain. People are cold about that but how do you treat chronic pain from a bone disease as well as addiction? Too much emphasis in our culture on being off MMT before you are “clean”. Why? Lots of good research showing that my brain will never be “perfect” coming off suboxone put me in to a deep depression- A doc put it to me like insulin…. Sometimes insulin gets diabetes under control but even with all the right choices you may end up staying on insulin because your body can’t manage alone. So I’m on low dose still because my brain chemistry just can’t recover even if my soul did.
YouTube doesnt like part of my paragraph⬆ so I will try that again…. Clinic saved me THEN (15 years back) low buprenorphine keeps my brain chemistry right NOW. Our culture will accept casual drinking even minor pharma abuse but oh god if they hear you are on bupe still. Its like all your hard work means nothing. The physical conditions that made the pills available didn’t go away… Neither did the pain. Bupe controls pain.
@sid gdansk how what’s he missing?. Practicing a quasi religion?. Having insta friends?. What?. Most people get clean on their own.
the drugs strip you of the motivation even if you have the desire, its crazy i just cant take the psychological torment of withdrawal from methadone, i can barley handle the days as they are on it.
My late mother’s addiction absolutely destroyed so many parts of me. Scarred me in ways that I’ll never recover from… it almost killed my daughter. Do not act like loved ones of addicts aren’t humans themselves that addicts can use for their own gain
After what opioid addiction did to my family, I told my doctors that even if they gave me a Cesarean, I would never and will never take opioids again. I never abused them but they DESTROYED my life through loved ones’ addiction.
@arajoaina the difference is the levels and ease of opiod prescriptions. many have a family history of addiction or whats called an addictive personality. often times, those who get hooked have preexisting neurological/psychological issues that leave them predisposed. pill mills and companies that knowingly pushed for more and more opiod prescriptions are at fault just as much even more so than people struggling with addiction. companies specifically preyed on those susceptible to addiction, paid doctors more for prescribing highly addictive drugs, and covered it up. thankfully some of these companies have faced legal ramifications but the impacts have not been paid for.
of course the person with addiction is at a level of fault, but people always focus on that and not whatever lead up to that choice. the best thing we can do for addicts is harm reduction, medical care like subs or methadone, and mental support as often those with addiction have experienced trauma or are struggling with mental illness. we need to stop blaming addicts because it does nothing. they know they are at fault, and many struggle with extreme guilt. we dont need to remind them, we need to help heal them-or support them with clean rigs and medical supervision to prevent disease and death until they are ready for full treatment.
there is already enough hate and stigma surrounding addiction, and it is an epidemic. but because of the shame and disgust surrounding it, its an epidemic we are very hush hush about. it is very hard for addicts to get treatment in the US, the only way we can curb this horrific epidemic is compassion and treatment.
people will always use drugs, the only thing that will change is how we prevent and help these people to lessen the rates of death, illness, and addiction itself to drugs and alcohol
How long in recovery until you managed your ADHD? Did you use stimulant medication at all? I tried tennex and another no. Stimulant one and it did not help. But I have a lot of anxiety and they worry it would make it worse. I think if it’s the right dose it actually helps me think more clearly (I was prescribed Ritalin and Adderall when I was a teenager) and I did well.
I just started hoarding it over the summer instead of taking it and we stopped going to see that Dr. I was never on it again but I took another stimulant got weight loss. I didn’t feel more anxious. But I did pick my nails slightly more than usual. I did do some more repetetive behaviors because I was able to put all my attention into one thing or another.
@TaZeR I’m with you.Im going through the same.Gotta keep.fighting.Its 7.30 am .British time.Im fighting not to give in.
@NikoThesavage taking drugs isnt a life ))

@Flynn Leonard k
NICE MSG FLYNN.
I’M GLAD THE GOOD LORD SUPPLIED YOU WITH THE STRENGTH & WILL POWER TO MAKE IT THROUGH.
GOD BLESS YOU. 🙏🏼
@Roy Hemion how did it start making you sick?? ive been taking methadone for years and i am definetly not healthy anymore, due to the methadone.
@only me!!!! I was on it for years. Over time, I was getting headaches, nausea etc.
Even lowered my dose. I thought I had cancer or some unknown disease. I kept reducing it over months until I got down to 30 mgs. Then switched to Subutex.
I felt terrific for a long time. The brain can only handle taking anything for so long. I have chronic back pain and migraines. Getting off a chemical or switching gives the receptors time to heal.
All they see is $ signs
Good luck my friend, there’s so many people who have recovered from the suffering the disease of addiction. Seek them out as they always keen to support you to find a program that suits your requirements 🥰🤗
Luck and congrats!! You can do it!!!!!!
Good luck Sir
Good to hear, I am currently on 60ml a day, looking to taper down but slowly, very slowly. May I ask how fast you tapered off and how long you were on methadone please. Thanks
I wish u all the best, we humans are capable of miracles! Much love too u! Keep on fighting!!
Well done! Wish u all the best! Much love!
Wishing you the best and sending you so much love from Italy! ❤
Katherine Everman, I am so very happy for you ❤️ I am sure it took all of the strength and discipline you had in you. I lost a very dear friend to addiction. We, her friends tried everything. We let her know how much we loved her and we were right there for her. She was going to lose her husband of 25 years. They met when she was just 19 years old. We laid down boundaries, we encouraged her to go to detox and then inpatient rehab. She made it to detox and then she would always leave and go home. She did lose her husband and many of her friends no longer wanted her around and they gave up on her. I hated her addiction but I knew my friend was still there. She was really sick. I was by her side through dialysis, heart surgery and I took her to many of her specialist appointments. She moved out of her parents home and she moved in with her son, who is also struggling with addiction. They used together. She said that she wished with all her heart that she had tried rehab and listened to everyone that loved her. I was the last one, the only one left by her side with the exception of her parents. She died when she was just 50 years old. I miss her everyday. She was a very kind, loving, giving soul ❤️ it will be 7 years since her death in November. People don’t ask to become addicts. We need more compassion and more resources to help these people win their battle with addiction!!! God Bless You!!! Be proud of yourself. I am so very happy to hear that you are trying to help others with this illness. ❤️
Congratulations on getting off and staying off methadone.
Not many people who go on methadone treatment ever get off of it
