I don’t have a cell phone and I have never been on any of those social media sites lol. I just walk around shaking my head at all the nerds walking around with their head down staring at their phone all day.
Amazing job Poppy!
Where can I find this with Portuguese subtitles? I wish I could share it so more people can have access to it.
Almost everyone of these TED talks about social media start with the person talking about how unhealthy it is to have a system where we crave likes and affirmation and instead of saying, “We need to go back to a more normal form of social interaction and communication.” they say, “We can’t go back so we need to reestablish how we do our online life.”
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! We need to cut the cord!! You can’t manage this! It causes anxiety and depression not because we are doing it wrong, but because the system itself causes it. You can’t change it! You can’t manage it. You’re trying to have it both ways and it can’t be that way.
Porque é o TEd “x”, aí não tem legendas mesmo. Só os vídeos “oficiais” do TED que tem 🙁
This is…a really good TedTalk. Honestly I was expecting another middle aged white woman going on and on about how the internet is bad and how the new generation is filled with idiots. But I gotta say, this was a good breath of fresh air. Finaly someone acknowledging that the internet isn’t a scary monster looking to eat your soul. It’s only that if you make it that way. It can be an amazing place to discover new things and meet new people, as long as we use it wisely.
I can’t believe people count on likes to determine whether what they post is nice or not. I have seen people posting pictures and videos smoking hooka in their house getting thousands of likes, and then I have seen videos of people playing Mozart songs with an instruments getting 2 likes. When I post something I post it not thinking about likes because people will not like even if it is the best picture ever for several. Society is becoming a weird place.
I have felt like social media has been trying to kill me, so I really find solace in this kind of TED talk.
Agreed, 2K16, thank you! Young people especially need to pull away from these things. Many of them don’t even seem to have or want healthy relationships with humans anymore!
But that’s exactly the point, Apex….many people-especially much of our youth today DON”T use the internet/cell phones wisely… that’s why they’re addicted and it’s becoming such a problem in society!
It certainly IS realistic to ‘unplug’ now from electronics. In fact, it might be the only thing that is going to save anyone who is addicted to their cell phones.
I’m social media free and still doing okay. I’m alive, I have friends, my life is richer and boy do I have a lot more time.
That made me chuckle!
Thats awesome , I deleted my twitter, dont have instagram, I do have facebook still, although I limit my time on there. lets be friends
Awww I love her and how she talks, would make a great actress haha <3
Me too, only thing I have now is YouTube because I love watching my history channel and documentaries
I’ve been slowly unfriending people on facebook and I bet they didn’t even notice me gone because they never liked anything I post. I dont care to collect “friends” I barely know on Facebook to look popular. I rather have a handful of true friends who interact and speak to me. I think Facebook is just a easy way to spy or be nosy on each other
Same with me
I liked this video. Lol.. this was a powerful message.
Easy solution: force social media companies to take off the like opition
God what have we done to ourselves as a society….
I have over 7,000 followers on Instagram and not all of them like my posts and I get up to 30 likes on some of my posts. I used to complain about not getting enough likes on social media but not anymore because it’s not worth it and it doesn’t matter.
VCR Time Machine I had the same exact thought. Thank you for saying this because it needs to be heard, louder. Everyone’s talking about how to accommodate living with these technologies but cutting the cord is the way out. The way things always were. I personally think the Internet is a great tool and email is generally okay, but the social media addiction, the rise of the egos and self promotion via self made profiles is what’s destroying us. I’m 26 and finally decided it’s time to leave. I miss really being with my family, friends, and with myself.
I am happy to see more people talk about this phenomenon that uses tactics from casinos to addict you.
It’s a good idea to schedule your social media “distraction time.” This notion comes from a book called “Deep Work” by Cal Newport. The cost to all this is our abilities to focus.
Exactly. It just shows the extent of this addiction.
Exactly!! I disagreed with her advice to stay on. It’s a battle of the mind you will lose everytime. If you haven’t, check out videos from Jaron Lanier. He is one of the fathers of virtual reality and has a book about deleting SM all together. I am reading it now and it makea since.
@brian Kellogg I will never get rid of anything though
I rely on likes for my self worth though
I’m watching tedx talks since one year and this is literally the best talk I’ve seen, I felt she was comfortable and on her nature ! This talk must get more views !.. ❤️
Thank you sis
you’re still on youtube comment section, you are not SOCIAL MEDIA FREE.
Facts an that’s the way life should be
Cause the social media is terrible.
Whats worse is when a strong business woman raising kids gets no likes and chicks twerking and adding a link to her onlyfans gets 1000 likes.
I deleted facebook and my mind is def more calm. Peace of mind is what we all need
Some say “likes” were created to make people come back… So its also marketing purpose….but wonder maybe the best purpose of “like” is that it makes you know that somebody saw the video and got some message from it or entertainment, that it inspired someone in a positive way….So “likes” may be important for 50 percent, but in general, they are not important, to expect it. In general the “likes” are not so important because there is no scale how much the person likes the product or video…. maybe the person just clicked like to see more videos or just wants to support the channel but it doesnt mean he/she really liked the video, next day he/she may not be so interested, because of other responsibilities.. So people shouldnt focus on likes.
Deleted my facebook, instagram, twitter and snapchat a year and half ago and man I’ve been so happy, fulfilled and appreciating my life as I see it as my own – not giving a care about what others are doing in their lives!
Having social media = you’re a nerd because only smart people have phones
Funny how I used to collect followers just to be popular or something…
When you reach your 60s, all these social media likes dislikes will seem pointless – pure nonsense. Don’t you worry, Time will teach you everything.
Can you be more specific about the content of your article? After reading it, I still have some doubts. Hope you can help me.
