Thank you for making this video. I hope more people find your channel. You explained this better than David Sinclair himself.
Thanks @Road Less Travelled , glad you found it useful 😀
Very clearly explained – easy to understand . You are a great teacher! Please continue to do more health videos. Thanks!
Thanks for the support @David Tran, much appreciated 😀
Dear Brad: superb actionable video like the ones before !
I do weights and machines three times per wk., alternating with Zumba class another three days. I take recently 1 gr metformin at night
the days i do Zumba and rest day.
Any comments ?
Thanks
Gerardo from Miami.
I want to increase muscle mass.
Nice work on the exercise. Overall I aim for 3-5 workouts each week that are roughly 45 mins in length. Only the rest days do I take metformin. With how you want to gain muscle, metformin May get in the way of that. What might be an option is to gain the muscle you want, then start taking metformin on your rest days. What do you think?
Thanks for these great video’s. I wonder if there would be any benefit of metformin for those of us working out 6x per week. In this case metformin would only be taken 1x per week. Do you think that would be pointless?
Hi @Daniel Whyte , at this stage, with the research we have, it probably won’t be of much benefit
Thanks Brad & hi to all. Even at 68 years old, I prefer to go for a light version without Metformin etc. Maybe I would go for Niacin(acceptable dose)or NMN when it’s cheaper plus cold pressed olive oil or resveratrol. Good nutrition & adapted outdoor physical activity should do the rest.
Hi @Timothy Farrow , absolutely agree. There’s no substitute for a healthy diet, intermittent fasting, and exercise
Thanks- makes sense! Thank
What would be your recommendations re Metformin using if I have workouts 7 AM in the morning, 4 times per week (HIIT, Fitness: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday). Also at night of rest days or better in the morning / lunch to have enough time for it to leave blood/plasma till next workout? Thank you.
Ok so I’m confused. To me and most of my friends that are into this stuff, working out is the cornerstone to everything. I’m 53 and have been taking metformin for 3 years and I workout pretty much 7 days a week. You seem to be saying in my case I should either workout less or take less metformin? The thing is I very much doubt the studies accuracy, at least given my own personal experience. If that were correct I should have had the ‘wheels come off’ right after I turned 50 and started taking this stuff. But instead, my strength has increased massively, my speed is way better (I play hockey 2-3 days a week), agility improved, etc… virtually no area physically has not improved. I also take NMN and a bunch of vitamins and supps, and other stuff for muscle recover (BCAA’s etc). Long/short, I don’t think your messaging around metformin and working out is clear or accurate. It’s just a little too vague to say ‘don’t take metformin on the days you workout’.
I do want to add that I really like your channel and there is a lot of great info on here. And thanks for taking time to really break all this stuff down, that’s awesome and super appreciated!
Dr Brad Stanfield it is very scary to hear that exercising which seems to cure all sorts of illnesses (e.g bring balance to body) speeds aging. What is the basis of this comment?
Great communicater! Keep up the science based teaching.
hi Doc .. thanks for the video .. I have 2 questions .. ref study that showed reduced effects of exercise and metformin when taken together, is it the same one which was performed on a very small group of ELDERLY subjects or are there more such studies? I have recently been taking metformin for weight loss and do seem to be seeing some results .. could you let us know in the same regard (weightloss) how VILDAGLIPTIN and METFORMIN HYDROCHLORIDE would effect the same ( weight loss ) .. ( i am not diabetic, fm, 31 ).. thanks again
I read your post with great interest as I wait train five mornings a week Monday through Friday and plan to start taking Matt Foreman. I also do cardio on the weekends. I am 62 years old and look I have to admit it pretty darn great for my age and I am going to be starting niacinimide. Actually I already started taking niacinimide and I will show the results of that on my channel. With the conflicting studies about Met Forman and exercise, I almost decided not to start taking it, however I saw a few videos that seem very positive about it anyway, I know Dr. Sinclair takes it, and I loved your comment as it has convinced me to try taking met Forman. Can you share the other anti-aging supplements you take! I would appreciate that.
By the way Brad, I love your videos. In fact, on my channel I just recommended my viewers come see you. I mentioned your video on intermittent fasting. If you want to see my video in which I mentioned you, just Google Fifty Plus Beauty plus HGH. I think he present incredibly complex scientific information to where we can all understand it and I totally appreciate it. I am also into anti-aging and I appreciate your focus on that as well. I plan to link this video in a future video I have about my niacinamide Met Forman protocol. Sorry for the typos and missed spellings. I dictate my comments to save time.
@FiftyPlusBeauty Yeah I researched it further. Dr. Stanfield is of course right – taking metformin while working out heavily (5 or more days a week) is counter productive. I stopped taking it, it just doesn’t make sense based on the data. If you are not working out 5 or more days then it might be useful to take metformin on your rest days, but that can be tricky. Dr. Sinclair basically only takes it on extended times away from working out such as family vacations.
Dr. Stanfield lists all his supplements in the videos description (not ideal) so if you want to see his current stack go to his videos and look at his latest from a few days ago. It changes frequently so it’s always best to find/look at the most recent video he’s posted.
BTW, I wouldn’t dictate a comment and post it unedited like that. That just sends the wrong message, IMO.
@wensou I workout 5 days a week if you must know. On my rest days I play hockey and typically burn 1200-1500 calories. I’ve played my whole life, was drafted etc. I use an Oura Ring to track my fatigue and take rest days when needed. Each person is different, listen to your body. I simply don’t like sitting around, which other studies show is far deadlier than any perceived over training. For me and my fitness level, I simply don’t fatigue like a normal person. Even on my ‘rest days’ I take short hikes with my wife, play VR and burn a higher than normal amount yet I still recover without issue.
Dr. Stanfield fabulous video as usual. Quick question: I have noticed that Metformin comes in IR (instant release) and ER (extended release) forms. For aging purposes, does it make a difference in which type to use? Thanks again for you concise videos! Professional and informative.
Hi, good question. If you are exercising and hoping to only have metformin on rest days, then the IR version is better. That’s what I personally do
The study referenced here used 2000mg of Metformin (double the dose recommended by Dr David Sinclair).
Given the variety of doses available (500, 750, 1000, 1500, 2000mg) would there be benefit to consuming 500mg on exercise days and 1000mg on days off?
I wonder are there any studies showing rate response of metformin on these various metrics.
Is there any way to reduce the side effects? I am taking 500mg, started a week ago. It’s making me queasy. Nothing terrible but definitely uncomfortable. I tried a little antacid, did not help.
I exercise every day, but I am thinking about taking 2 rest days per week so that I can take metformin. Is 2 days a week taking metformin enough to get its benefits? I would like to know how metformin affects strength/weight training…
Dr. Brad, when talking about exercise, it’s confusing for older folks. The over 65 group rarely exercise much more than walking and light calisthenics.
For the over 65’s is only walking a mile, or moving a little considered exercise enough to not take Metformin?
I wish studies were being done for Metaformin type medicines for the treatment of chronic diseases like RA etc… Berberine is reappearing on the supplement scene, which is touted to be similar to metaformin. So many people are struggling with disease even with the advances on IF, Insulin etc.it would be nice to have a adjunct treatment for people who arent having luck with lifestyle and therapies.
Thanks Brad. I still don’t understand why to take Metformin at night, specifically. What about the glycation theory of aging? Would that not mean we should take it during the day when we are eating, to prevent glucose spikes and associated glycation damage?
Just sharing my opinion, i’m inslin resistant since young adulthood, my HOMA IR is around 3.0 so classified as highly resistant without being diabetic, currently on trt and i started metformin at only 250 mg per day and it is doing wonders for me since body recomposition to a lot less water in take and peeing.
My work outs are getting better no bloating and. Finally getting leaner which has been and impossible task for many years.
Sum it all up in, if you are enhanced like on trt for example you’ll enjoy of all the benefits of insulin sensitivity without the drawbacks of metformin, it won’t affect gym performance at all if you are enhanced.
On the other hand i dis try it with no trt and i felt it did affect my work outs but i also took a larger dose, now only taking 250 mg
Does anyone know, if you’re taking Metformin and HGH would they contradict each other? I know Metformin is supposed to decrease IGF-1 but Growth Hormone increases IGF-1.
You mean grams correct? Instead of mg?
@DigitalRaider1 no, mg
The study references 2000mg
Sinclair takes 1000mg (1g)
2000g would be 2kg of metformin, I fear you’d be very dead after a single dose that size 😅
Thanks for the great video. I’m looking to start taking Metformin but I had no idea about the exercise aspect. I will make sure to take it only on the days when I’m not weight training.
Thanks for the excellent video. My question is – if metformin is taken on days you don’t exercise, what is the point of this? The half life is 17.6 hours and can stay in your system for 96.8 hours (according to some websites). So even if you don’t take it on your exercise days, it’s still in your system… this is what confuses me. Any thoughts on this?
