This video is perfectly on time! I’ve been thinking how much time I’ve been wasting on my phone. Thank you!
Lately I place my cellphone in a see through plastic container with a sealed lid. On top of that I put a sticky note that reads “control”. This enables me to see what comes in and reinforces my willpower. The voice mail takes care of calls and notifications will always be there. Check your phone on breaks, every 2- 3hours for 10-15 minutes.
You can survive without your smartphone, just be more intentional about when you use it. Friction definitely helps; turn notifications off, go on airplane mode, logout from apps or even turn your phone OFF if you need to concentrate. You are smarter than your phone, control it before it controls you.
My phone addiction is ruining my life. I’m an engineering student going through my toughest semester and I spend on average 8+hours on my phone each day and barely any time at all studying or working.
Just wanted to put that out there
Couldn’t agree more…
I just did a two week cleanse, no social media but YouTube (I use it to watch videos like this, it’s about learning not entertaining) and it felt so good. Now Twitter feels too conflictive, too messy and negative. Instagram feels too materialistic, too empty. I like social media but I see myself using it less and less.
Luckily, all addictions have a “common core”… we can use a surprising amount of insights from other addictions to break free!
Or replace your facebook addiction with Duolingo. Then, you’ll at least be able to say “this boy is drinking milk” in 15 languages.
Just want to say something. You have to delete the password memorized by apple because it erase the friction that we are trying to make between you and the social media. So delete your password from the cloud and when you log in if you see that you know perfectly your password, just change it to increase the friction. That was a great video Thomas, really helpful 👍🏼
@Aznood That the methods that help people quit smoking or social media addiction also help people quit a phone addiction
Tell me more about the common core of addictions and how to get rid of it.
I actually took this one step further. I only have half the password and my wife has the other half. If either of us want to get on social media, we have to ask each other for the other half of the password. I haven’t logged into social media in weeks.
I mouthed “logging out” the same time you said it. I feel like we know the answer, its just putting it into practice. Its an addiction, it really is.
Completely agree that creating more friction – like logging out of social media – helps to break bad habits. For my iPhone users out there, also try Apple’s “offload” feature that allows you to basically uninstall the app but keep all your data. Meaning those 30 seconds longer it takes to log in becomes more like 2 minutes when the app has to completely reinstall for you to access it. I use this method and find it very effective.
To make it even harder to log in, you can make the password really difficult to type in (lots of capital and lower case letters mixed in with numbers and symbols).
In the last year I have found out that by waking up and reading a book for an hour instead of using my phone I’m not only using my phone less, I’m also way more concentrated in other mental tasks (such as studying)
Wow this can work for non social media stuff too, great!
This is one of the reasons I’m looking forward to flip phones making a comeback. Much like putting a tv in a curio cabinet, the simple act of having to flip open the device should be enough of a deterrent for a lot of people.
Also helpful: Re-arrange your home display. Usually we know exactly where our apps are, but if you put them someone else, you’re gonna have to look for it and have more time to think about what you’re actually doing – and that you don’t want to spend as much time on social media.
Another method that works really well is to uninstall the app and instead add a shortcut to the website to your homescreen.
Usually the websites just aren’t as comfortable to use as the apps, so this added discomfort keeps you from wanting to use the site as much and you won’t use it for as long.
Worked really well for me to get out of my Twitter addiction.
👍
What do you do to combat friends constantly wanting your attention? I tried this a while back and loved it! But then (only some of) my friends nag when I don’t give them constant attention on whatever socials i’m connected with them on. can be really frustrating.
@Tee for Instagram you can disable your account temporarily.. that way you’ll friends would know you’re off the app rn when they see your username as “instagram user”
This is for short “cleanses” ofc..
I’ve disabled mine for the last three days and its been great!
I keep doing this and eventually get used to where it is so need to move it again. I feel like someone needs to create an app that randomly moves around all your apps apart from ones you specify. Tried to find an app for that but it doesn’t seem to exist!
I was greatly inspired by some ideas of the book “Make Time” and implemented them in a way that fit my environment… And seriously, that introduction of inconvenience works wonders… Introducing friction works well and I have seen real changes in myself
I got into the most prestigious university in my country this semester, Thomas tips helped me a lot! I never went to highschool so it’s really a big achievement for me. Never give up guys. And thank you Thomas for great content! ❤️
No
@Tee You get to decide how frequently you are willing to be interrupted. Decide how often you are willing to be notified by these apps and set your notifications up to only interrupt you when you want it to. Don’t just allow anyone to interrupt your focus at any time – thats a recipe for failure.
Come to think of it that’s a great tip🤔🔥the more time you spend looking for the app, the more time you will get to be aware of what you are doing…smart 👌🏽
@MrsMcSwan 🤔that could actually be a nice app to keep your brain on alert.😂But …it’ll also be confusing. It’ll be like some borrowed you their phone.. even if it’s yours.😂
Sometimes this Phone addiction makes me prone to insecurities. Especially seeing successful peers in the same career field I’m in. I mean a part of me is happy for them but another part of me is saying “why not me?”. When those moments happen it’s energy draining ,on top of that, it’s Time consuming. I appreciate the tips you shared on this video and I’ll make sure to apply them to my routine to beat this phone addiction.❤️🧘🏽♂️I’m forever grateful for your content. And I hope it also helps the next person as much as it helps me. Have A Blessed Self-Improvement journey.🙏🏾
How can we notice these “common core” in our lives?🤔
@MiNDSET iN ACTiON Well, you can look for the “pressure” your (bad) emotions exert on you – that pretty much determines an addiction
@MiNDSET iN ACTiON no dont.. I tried that, you’ll get used to it fast.. and you’ll end up spending MORE time rearranging than you’d want to …
@Köln-Chorweiler Nord understandable have a nice day 👍👍
@Mridhul ML So true I had that problem. And to make matter worse I always remember were I put my apps
@Tee just tell ur friend that u need some time for urself so that u can safely & appropriately “function” through your OWN life. If they don’t understand your reason, they’re basically rejecting your “functioning” mechanism that get you through your life which is already exhausting enough (hahaha), then they’re not a good friend and not worth keeping at all. Trust me, it’ll be worth it, and there’s no better friend than a friend who understands and accepts you for who you are.
Completely understandable. I hope you were about to make some small improvements since u left posted. Wish you all the best in your studies!
This is me, I’m struggling. But at some point I’ll be able to slap myself into reality
When you first told us to log out … the first thing that I thought of in my head was “it’s gonna take more effort for me to log back in, it won’t stop me” but since you addressed that you had those thoughts also and it made a difference for you, it makes me want to try it out for real. 💕 thanks in advance, I have a good feeling about it
Just saw your video and it’s great! I always learn something from you, thank-you so much. Phone addiction is like other addictions. There has to be a desire to stop as the first step.
Thanks for the advice
its not the phone its u
Me too! I end up wasting so much time. And if I wasn’t gonna study I could have at least done something fun that I truly enjoy. But no, instead I’m mindlessly watching YouTube shorts 😪
I really hope it gets better!
Great idea! I never thought about it before.
Le garçon some thing some thing
Came back to say that this was surprisingly effective for me. Also, always have a book or a kindle, so you always have something to do to pass that boredom
Hahaha so true
umiinom ng gatas ang lalaking bata
