What a great program! Connection, community, compassion make up a powerful trio for long-term recovery.
Thanks for this message, Shawn – very encouraging.
Thanks Shawn for your personal story and inspiring service!
YES! The opposite of addiction is not sobriety — it’s connection!
This is wonderful!! Physical activity is something that is not promoted in the recovery community enough!! There need to be more programs like this!
I am very proud of you Shawn. Thank you for sharing your story on such an influential platform. And I agree that recovery will greatly benefit from a tribe of like minded people. I am excited to be involved! Thank you
Excellent my friend … here is a great quote … “Your addiction wasn’t your problem. Your addiction was your attempt to solve the problem. In all cases of addiction that I have seen, there’s deep pain that comes out of trauma. The addiction is the person’s unconscious attempt to escape from the pain. ” — Gabor Mat
Great Ted talk from a great human being. Thanks for your compassion and commitment to help society .
Shawn is the real deal and someone who gets what needs to happen to change from the inside out.
I needed to hear this, I am in Seattle Washington. Dealing with wanting to relapse currently. I have a wife and three kids and it’s sad how much addiction has control over me. I will not let it get the best of me but it’s hard not to give in.
The problem is the community. No one wants it in their back yard
I am interning as a Clinical psychologist in my state hospital and this Corona virus lockdown has unexpectedly caused an influx of the victims of Drug addiction due to the unavailability of drugs in this lockdown. Most of my patients have had relapses before and I needed to watch this video .
@Ryan amen
“Opposite of addiction isn’t sobriety opposite of addiction is connection”
@nTactime_ W brooo me too these withdrawals sum bro wtf
Thanks for your insight Shawn and congrats on your recovery!
I’ve been in recovery since September 2020 and I’ll tell you, you relapse when you don’t reach out and surround yourself with people who love you and support you. It took the ending of my 2 year relationship and real first love to finally hit rock bottom at the end of this April. But, I’ll tell you, despite being heartbroken and working thru guilt and shame of my past, I’m sober and will continue to be sober.
Be honest, no one can change you, you have to decide to be sober.
You are deserving of love and you’re worth it
I prey that this message finds you well ,hang in there buddy. You have the strength with in you, don’t give up
As with many other addictions, substance abuse addiction can be a life and career threatening experience that requires a lot of conscious effort to overcome, which is what has been shown here. I also recommend having a workbook like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Worksheets for Substance Abuse by Portia Cruise can be a very handy companion to track your progress, stay motivated, and avoid relapse.
U okay now? How’s it going? I have a coke addiction and i get what u mean.. i have decent life but the control this can have over me some days is crazy… hope youre all good, man.
So much respect 🙌 to all those helping others heal. 🦋 It’s a true calling. I absolutely found my purpose in telling my story of borderline death ☠️ and life implosion 🤯 to healing my brain and body to get my life back! Much luv! 🕉 You can heal!
Great message! Dealing with addiction is always difficult. Getting and staying sober is never easy but it’s worth the effort.

@kim morehouse that is wonderful!
I “failed” treatment 4 times, too! The difference in the fifth program is that my counselor made sure we had not just a plan for what NOT to do (use drugs). We each left with an individualized plan for how to replace it with meaningful activity and connection. Connection with our deepest selves, our purpose, loved ones, and community. We were always encouraged to come back, talk about how it’s going, and adjust it…anytime. I went from thinking I would never get off the streets and on drugs… to only 3 courses and a culminating project left in a degree program. I’m motivated, at peace, and eager to give back the help I received. I no longer beat myself up for experiencing addiction. Unconditional acceptance taught me not to judge others, and that every single person is equally valuable. I am grateful I survived…many don’t, especially today. If I’m still here, there must be a reason. This is the core belief stigma destroys in people struggling with this devastating disease. No wonder the recovery rate is too low. We don’t tell people with most any other disease they are unworthy of recovery, or failures if they don’t, although there are a few we treat similarly. Some mental illnesses and metabolic, endocrine, and inflammatory diseases that cause weight gain come to mind. Everyone needs to know we are not our disease, and we all deserve to be here. We all have a purpose. ❤️🩹
@Steve Calderbank We are all born into the world through trauma. Bullying, fitting in (or not) during Middle School and High School, loss of a person or pet, poverty, career pressure, or fear about the state of the world or environment…really anything can cause trauma. Also, physical events like a loss or a car accident. It doesn’t have to be abuse, being orphaned, or a war veteran, or major recognized events. Something seemingly insignificant to others can be a psychic wound. People often try to cover or soothe these wounds subconsciously, without identifying as a survivor. (Forgive me…I’m a grad student in psychology). I agree that things come into play besides trauma, but I think most people have significant trauma we are unaware of, at some point.
@David Booher Love this!
@kim morehouse I hope ur doing good lmk how your holding up
Stay up bro you got this. Idk how it feels to be sober but you can do this for you r family they need you even more than you think you need them
Literally just experience the same thing now. Hope things are going well now
My life has become immeasurably better. The ending of that relationship saved my life, took time for myself to heal, make peace with my actions, the past, and forgave myself. No sense in living in shame and guilt. Keep going one day at a time!
@Sean Culp thank you so much for sharing. I forgot to thank you, your message probably saved me too. It was what I needed to finally reach out and take this secret off my chest already. I feel so much relief now sharing this. Feels like I’m in the right direction to finally beat this
Everything I just read about addiction is so so true
