Balance Catamarans Ruby rose YT channels new Cat this ticks all there boxes and they loved the balance 525 just too big for them and over budget. where this fits the bill.
There is nothing “green” about a plastic boat powered by engines or batteries.
Foam cores, epoxy and vinylester resins. Yup, not in the slightest bit “green”
The issue here is a green boat is, ideally, sailing in the lightest air. And to do that you do need a boat built as lightly as possible for the payload and equipment you wish to carry. I have not heard of a renewable material we can use that would be greener, but love to hear your ideas. I think if a boat can sail more than motor and is built to last a long time and the interior woods are renewable and the boat carries a lot of solar it is a far green boat than one that is heavy, slow, requires a lot of motoring and is of modest quality so it does not last very long. But I agree that glass, epoxy, and foam are not green materials, per se. I think when it comes to green thinking few things can be totally green in cars or boats, or in many things, and one simply looks for the greener solution. I know that when I was exploring green cars I came to see that where one drives is as important as the car itself. In a state that used mostly coal for generating electricity an all electric car is not nearly as green as when it charges up in a state more reliant on nuclear – and then of course folks object to that. @Balance Catamarans My apologies for playing the devil’s advocate – I appreciate what you’re aiming to do, but what you’re aiming to do isn’t “green” rather very muddy shades of “green”
GRP/Kevlar/other plastic hulls will remain non-recyclable hulls; there is currently no way to avoid sending them to land-fill. Greener would be to re-use old hulls.
Solar is definitely improving in efficiency, but I have no idea about the chemicals and minerals involved in their manufacture, nor susbsequent transportation footprint of worldwide delivery.
The quest to build lighter “greener” boats is filling a false niche.
Shouldn’t we be trying to convince people that a heavier boat will last longer, provide a better sailing platform and be better for the planet?
It might take an extra day or two to arrive at the perfect beach, but how long will that beach remain perfect while we persist in increasing the use of single use plastics?

Do Balance catamarans have any rain water collecting system ?
The 482 and 442 have gutters you could use for rain catchment, yes. In the old days these were popular, but with watermakers not deemed especially important these days. Best, Phil

I always thought of using a rain catchment system as a backup of the watermaker or a way to prolong the off grid experience without having to have the generator/engine work as much. It’s seems to me an simple and intelligent design solutions that helps in becoming more green.
@2212db Heavier catamarans don’t go anywhere without a lot of wind or some sort of power. You have to keep a catamaran light. An old wood boat still takes a lot of non-green products to keep it going. There are some marine architects in Europe that are trying out other materials for the hulls. Phil is also building boats that people live on, not for weekend or holiday sailing.
Have you thought of making the house voltage 12vdc? Reduces the energy loss of inverters.
Also the house battery bank and the electric motors battery banks could be separate with different voltages for each.

What is green at a balance catamaran?
The only green sailboat would be a dugout sailing canoe. Viking sailboat or perhaps a proa. Chinese junk as well. Made of wood that eventually grows back in time. Modern sailboats including a hybrid or even all electric propulsion are made with 99.99% of man made material. Some of wich are extremely extremely rare metals that ruin the planet as we know it by extracting them. The only green on a say balance 526 is the extremely thin wood veneer used to cover foam or honeycomb with epoxy than covered with synthetic varnish. 99.99 % non green non recycable man made materials are used to build and maintain a modern sailboat.
