I’m so thankful for keto it was a gateway drug into nutrition, the longest I’ve gone is 12 weeks straight but my sleep always suffered so badly that I was averaging about four hours a night and found that to be unsustainable. I still eat my meals mainly keto based but have had to add in sweet potatoes brown rice and oatmeal to my diet so that I can finally relax enough to sleep.
Fat was bad, fat became good, carbs kills, low carbs are good, now more carbs not so bad after all, saturated fat is poison, actually saturated fat is good, Vegetarianism is the way to go, eating meat is better, eggs are death, eggs are awesome, IF is the way to go, then IF has downsides and needs tweaking, then came Keto, the one miracle solution for all.. soon Keto is out of fashion and will be replaced by a new thing. This is all hilarious..
I THOROUGHLY agree. Been strict keto 4 years now and have done remarkable in my metabolic markers. But I’ve recently introduced fresh seasonal berries (in moderation) and some citrus (I love grapefruit) and as fall approaches I will introduce tubers. I have no problem with carnivore but as food prices soar I am VERY happy that I AM fat adapted thus eat OMAD.
I think Keto is a great way to break into a better way of eating; you learn how metabolism works, learn what your body needs to perform at its highest level and it trains the mind to maintain a disciplined approach to eating. When you’re ready, let go and transition to whatever works.
This was a GREAT discussion! With almost 5 years of keto/carnivore + IF behind me, I have also found it beneficial to step away from it periodically.
The scale, plus abdomen ‘pinch testing’ is my guide for when it’s time to tighten up the diet again.
Having a lean, fit, non-diabetic athlete adding healthy carbs back in is a very different situation than where most of us currently are. For me, low-carb has to be my path for a very long time for my health.
I love this discussion and evolution of the nutrition space. Keto was great for me. Got me in the best shape of my life in my 40s; repaired my metabolism as well as many other issues (joints, inflammation, etc) but my sleep was absolutely horrible. was waking up constantly in the middle of night to pee and constant muscle cramping (and yes I was taking sufficient electrolytes). I experimented with the Vertical diet (basically a red meat and rice fodmap diet) and my sleep was substantially better. also listened to Paul Salidino’s podcast when he mentioned where he encountered the same issues as me so I started more fruit as well. so now my diet is a combination of high protein, low carb, moderate fat with emphasis on foods that agree with me. Strict Keto is still a tool I go back to because, with the added carbs back in, I can definitely see that I’m less defined due to water retention.
Berries and red grapefruit were always okay. Also, natural foods are good after you’ve lost the weight and are not consuming unnatural processed foods

I am 66 years old, have no real health issues, am 5’4″ and weigh 105 pounds, mostly achieved by a ketogenic lifestyle. I occasionally and selectively indulge in sweet potatoes, some other resistant starch veggies, and fruits such as berries and in the summer – I look forward to this every year – I must have my fresh peaches. I have maintained my weight for over 3 years and my doctor is very happy with my bloodwork and other numbers. I am working on strength training and I walk daily. I will never go back to my old way of eating.
I just went back on keto. I feel so much better mentally and physically. When I was off keto I missed it so much I would rather have a cheat meal every once in a while every few months or so then quit again

I wasn’t on keto/IF to lose weight- I have & STILL have a fatty liver so fructose is a huge enemy & MAJOR contributor to dinovo lipogenesis. THATS why my journey extremely limited fruits like grapefruit and a very LIMITED amount of berry consumption.
Since my journey continues but markers are greatly improved I can from time to time indulge in SOME fructose containing foods but I don’t want to diminish my achievements. Plus I’m 67 years old and don’t really know how much time I have to really reverse the damage I’ve already done.
This was interesting. I grew up in Japan’s countryside. We only ate what was seasonally available, mostly foraged or grown. We pickled/fermented our veggies to be eaten in the winter months with wild boar or store bought fish and sweet potatoes. We ate rice very sparingly throughout the year because it was expensive. We mostly ate fruits ( including cucumbers, and other squashes, tomatoes) wild and grown during the summer.
I’m doing keto right now but considering doing my genetic ancestral diet. I’m the only one in my family living in America and I’m the only one with weight and health issues.

I love this new evolution in the keto community. Keto and fasting have brought me into a place where I can read my body, metabolism, energy levels, and overall responses to different foods. Maintaining metabolic flexibility and utilizing 24-48hr fasts every week or two is now my general guideline. If I’ve been eating a lot of carbs for a while, I then fast for 24-48 hours and eat keto for a week or so. I then ease into a more normal diet and ebb and flow with these states.

Keto has worked for me. Lost 60 lbs, no longer diabetic with many other benefits. If I feel I need a little more carbs on a particular day I just add some, but then go right back to keto. Once you make it a habit and start adding carbs here and there, before you know it your right back to where you started. Just make small adjustments as needled. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. These guys are very knowledgeable but sometimes I think they over complicate things.
@J K A prime example is a female content creator that for years said “cholesterol doesn’t matter” as her viewers were in a panic as their numbers went through the roof doing keto. She is now making videos on how to “lower cholesterol” She beat one side of the argument into the ground running out of content, so now is posting videos promoting the opposite side. Dangerous stuff imo.

This was fantastic seeing you two are my go to YouTuber’s for the latest research on health and fitness. I have shifted my eating window to a earlier time so I finish at between 3-5. I was a OMAD and it stopped working unless I did extended fasting(2-5day). I am now doing 20-4 or 18-6 for 3 days and then a 36hr fast. Repeat. I’m eating low carb to keto. I enjoy my high protein yogurt with berries and nuts for breakfast then protein and veggies for the next meal. I’m also a 1st AM trainer. Thank you both again

Thank you so much, Thomas, for having these conversations. Seriously. Keto saved my life by reversing my diabetes/PCOS and helping me lose 125lbs. But I’ve found recently that I need to add some more healthy carbs to further improve my health for several reasons (familial high cholesterol, sudden thyroid issues, and to fuel my rigorous exercise, etc). And tbh I blamed myself and thought there was something wrong with me personally when I decided I may need to experiment with my macros and eat foods I was afraid of for so long (partially because of what I saw online for years). I really appreciate you being open to adapt and have convos with different channels when more science comes out.
Low carb has already alleviated my kidney pressure completely as well as my leg isn’t numb and my toes don’t tingle. (diabetic signs reversing) and it’s only been about a week. Isn’t it a great feeling to be able to heal yourself!? Congratulations to you too! Plus Iodine could help your thyroid. Dr Ken Berry does some good videos on that. I do eat some berries, bee pollen, and certain lower oxalate vegetables too like cucumbers, cabbage, mushrooms, onions, romaine, etc

Eat mostly Whole Foods, at least 50% vegetables, eat only 2-3 times a day, and eat a variety of foods. Love life…
@Southern Storm i drink kefir lately as well . I stopped using melatonin ive read its not good for us . Try vitamin d3 10k iu before bed it works !!!
I’m actually frustrated by the “expert” flip. Keto is a tool to lose weight, but if you actually start saying we should eat more carbs after years of saying we shouldn’t, then you will lose all credibility in my eyes.
You guys and Saladino are all very active and relatively young, and I applaud you all for that, but you rarely address the metabolically broken 50+ (and some even younger), who struggle and have struggled for years to fix themselves. At 54, I was able to do IF and Keto / carnivore and lost 100 pounds and reversed some serious medical conditions (i.e. U2’s). I now exercise 10+ hours a week, but i don’t dare eat like Saladino. Remember, when you talk about giving up keto and increasing carbs, you are also talking to thousands of folks who struggle with moderation and fitness (the reason they are often metabolically broken in the first place). Just remember us who really are not free to give up low carb / keto/ carnivore.
Yes it’s their job to overcomplicate to create content. Eat meat, sleep repeat, no one would be obese or diabetic.

I would like to know who will eat for 8 hours how much can anyone eat so much. I never eat until I am stuffed completely like I did before keto and now fasting.
I feel so much worse when I stop keto as well. But I am very insulin resistant. Hard to do carbs even when exercising. My fasted always goes to pre diabetic. Gestational diabetes really set me back
carbs actually make me more slow more tired more lazy and more fat,,,

Michael Poger: 12 weeks on keto your just getting started and that’s if you were strict keto with no cheating. Coming off the carbs is like coming off crack. Your body needs to detox. Do six months you wont have any sleeping issues and your body will be healthier for it.

@Scott McLoughlin Agree on never eat processed foods. Too many people jump on KETO, IMF etc. without FIRST having switched to WHOLE food sources. Do that FIRST then if still needed try KETO, FASTING etc.
Keto is a tool in your toolbox. No need to always be in ketosis and likewise no need to never be in ketosis. Train yourself to be metabolically flexible.
This is so helpful! I don’t do full keto, but a combination of a IF and low carb and it did wonders for me on my A1C and I lost 90. These last 10 I wanted to lose have been brutal and I can tell I feel a bit off. Any suggestions and I think part of it is I am food scared. Any suggestions on how you brought some stuff back in, I am all ears.

The problem with simplistic diets like keto, it that they invite a simplistic view of the science. You have to ignore all of the complexities that don’t fit the paradigm. Then people get disappointed and become more cynical. That’s why we focus on educating on the fundamentals.
Same here on moving to the US and being the only one in my family to suffer weigh gain. The food here is just not good. Even the unprocessed lack the quality of home.
You might consider a reverse diet to bring your metabolism to a higher level. My weight loss slowed down and I was mentally tired from restricting. Took a 4mo diet break, regained 10 lbs, but I started cutting again a month ago and I’m already down 7lbs. Good luck!
@Shannon Lewis I have to agree..I followed Thomas when he was Keto..because I was pre diabetic..Keto helped me..but if I started to add carbs now..I would go back to being prediabetic. This channel is no longer for people who are diabetic now..It is not about growing, but more like he got bored with Keto.

The simple reality is that basically anything can work as long as your calorie input and output are balanced to meet your current body weight goal and you’re doing enough physical activity.
Lose weight? Eat less. Gain weight? Eat more. Moving more is probably beneficial either way especially if you’re not hitting recommended activity levels.

Very interesting. Having grown up in Japan myself, I know that traditional Japanese cuisine actually isn’t as carb based as many people think. Rice (especially brown rice) and tubers were a staple mostly for the peasant and the middle class, while the rich ate white rice, fish, and occasionally red meat.
True. I kept on playing around and experimenting, such as adjusting my macros and how many meals and what time of day I ate those meals, and have found out that I function best on a meat-based, high protein, moderate fat, low carb diet at lunch and at dinner, and sometimes OMAD at dinner, depending on how satiated I am throughout the day.
@Southern Storm – I do exactly that (kefir and melatonin around bedtime) and sleep has improved very much. But it’s not until reading your experience that it’s clicked – won’t be changing that regime. Cheers

Why would you ever let yourself get to the point where you need to tighten up again?
High cholesterol is not a disease. Maybe if you are in the 400-500 plus you might be concerned, but the whole idea of slightly high cholesterol as a risk factor for a disease was invented by Ancel Keys, and pushed by the government, media, medical establishment and drug companies. The propaganda was so effective it has fooled 90 plus percent of the population…cholesterol is evolutionary, necessary and normal. A little high, or a lot high does not mean you have a disease…it actually means you might live a little longer…high cholesterol is a blessing.
Definitely get the tubers carbs fruit berries back in and reduce the saturated fat . Still gotta count tge calories regardless of the diet 💪

@Functional Aesthetics E.C. I’ve noticed the same thing. I practice intermittent fasting and some days I don’t try but end up going low carb/high protein and if I do that a couple days in a row I feel it in my workouts. I always pack apples, bananas and baked potatoes in my lunch but some days, like I said, they just don’t get eaten and it’s not deliberate, I just like the high protein foods more.
@Cyberfunk well, you know what… I believe that before keto, I was extremely ill with a terrible outlook for my future… slowly dying from diabetes complications, some of which are permanent but many of which are gone or in remission.
My overall health markers went from the extreme end of poor …to now in the standard “normal” ranges. That includes marked improvement in liver AND kidney scores.
So, if I can provide assistance to even a few people in their health journey, I will continue to do so.

I think it’s a joke for these people saying that they added some fruit back into their diet as long as they are exercising. Nobody gets overweight by eating carbs from fruits, or vegetables, or starches. they get fat from lack of activity, and simple carbs like bread, soda’s etc. If you are physically active, and your diet is entirely natural, meaning it’s from meat, dairy, veggies, starches (potatoes), poultry, fish, and fruit, and you aren’t adding to that, you won’t get heavy. You know what I’m talking about. Fast food, cake, ice cream, chips, cookies etc.
@Jibril calories in, calories out is a nice saying to spout off when you really have no idea what you’re talking about but spend 3 months eating 2,000 cals/day of chicken breast and then spend 3 months eating 2,000 cals/day of Jelly Beans then report back.
Absolutely brilliant especially when he questioned “when does a bear know when its time to eat berries?”. How about when they are f’n ripe. This guy was stupid ten years ago still is.
Go back to Japan and live longer. (No offense).
Carbs also don’t work for many people with gut issues. Its subjective but it has happened to many people. I am not keto but I eat more meats along with fat.
I stopped keto is screwed up my hormones so bad and now I’m low carb no processed foods and I hit my ideal weight only after quit keto and quit carnivore ! No cravings and my A-1C is 4.8 eating meat , eggs fruits vegetables, dark chocolate all organic of course ….I’ll never do keto again !
