Thank you for this video. My glucose went up slowly over 3 months during keto to about 105. I think there were hidden carbs in my diet. Mostly lactose. So i’m using lactose free now. I am committed fully to this way of eating to heal myself, my body is very insulin resistant (although not officially diabetic 2) when I fast my bld glucose rises, drops to a normal number post meals, but I’m pretty sure this is why my wt is stalled and I rarely register bld ketones >0.5, (Dawn Phenomenon) I keep net carbs below 20 and get the majority from my green smoothies and cruciferous greens. I don’t see changes after my initial drop of 20 pounds I’ve been stuck same weight past 6 weeks. Hoping my consistency is reversing my fatty liver and things will begin to improve, still need to lose 90 pounds.

The one thing you don’t mention that I have found to be extremely effective is Extended Fasting. I have found a quarterly 10-day fast to do incredible healing for the body.
Thanks for this video. I have to stay around 20 grams or my sugars go up. I’ve lost 170 lbs. on Keto/intermittent fasting with a 2-4 hour window. Meats, cheese, fats & extremely low carb veggies are the ONLY way I lose weight and keep my sugars normal. Strawberries take my sugar over 200.😞I’ve fallen off the wagon for about 5 months ugh after being on my plan for 1 1/2 years. I haven’t even enjoyed the high carb junk I’ve endulged in! Still looking for a video for people with “normal” blood glucose levels trying to take them down lower but it’s slightly higher after a few months of fasting/keto. When I started I’d been between 84-88 range, and now I’m consistently in the low 90s (91/92). I’ve lost 30 lbs since I’ve started and blood pressure remains stable/elevated (124/75 ish)…I still have about 80 more pounds to my first major goal weight however so I’m still pushing through. Can’t undo all my damage but can undo some and prevent a bit more.

When I was on the carnivore diet (no carbs at all for 16 days), my blood sugar never went below 110 but never went over 140. I had to stop the diet because of severe diarrhea, dizziness, racing heart, etc. This was probably due to electrolyte imbalance. I should also have probably taken ox bile to help my gallbladder with all the fat. But I enjoyed no gastric distress at all, just diarrhea.
Just got my labs back today and my cholesterol was 210 (non -HDL – whatever that is.) My fasting glucose was 157!!!?? Never has my fasting glucose been that high for labs. My A1C was 6.5 which is better than six months ago. Since the 16-day trial, I’ve been doing low carb. I’m not seeing any benefits. I actually caught a cold right after the 16 days and still have no energy and feel like crap. I am so disappointed and ready to quit.
The most recent blow was today. I made a beautiful, wonderful tasting low carb bread made from whey protein isolate. I was so happy. It was so good. Well, 30 minutes later, I developed horrible gastric pain and diarrhea. I GIVE UP.
I had been doing roughly 18/6 for years, on a standard diet. Became obese and mildly diabetic. (Fasting 120s, 140 150 after eating.)
Switched to keto 18/6, 10g per day. My sugars initially dropped to 70s and 80s. 90s after a meal. Doing approx 19/5.i was thrilled!!!!
Then suddenly sugars jumped to the 110 to 120 range all day with no change in diet or fasting…if anything I was doing longer fasts. 20 to 22 hours and near 0 carb.
At the same time, insomnia, intense trembling, extreme anxiety, outbursts of anger, nausea, gagging.
I believe I’m having a catecholamine/cortisol response. My husband said you have to go back to eating in the middle of the day.
So, I did. Back to 18/6 keto 10g per day. Ive ost 15 to 20 pounds, depending on the day since early August.
I felt somewhat better, but sugars have not dropped. And some days, I absolutely have to eat in the late AM because of the anxiety and shaking, even though my sugar is 115. Even if I drop my carbs to 0.
I have to say, I’m frightened. I’m afraid I’ve fried my adrenals as well as severe insulin resistance!
Intermittent fasting is not for everyone!!!. And this Dr needs to address the adrenal response and adrenal fatigue.
I don’t know what to do. Eating more carbs makes me feel better, but at the cost of my sugars.
It’s called adaptive glucose sparing. The body prefers fat for fuel now and “spares” the glucose for later use. It’s normal according to Dr. Berg and Dr. Jason Fung. Dr. Berg has a video on it.

Elle, u should check a food intolerance. May be u are eating something that spikes your glucose levels.
Question, can you have a high A1C (insulin resistance) and be able to go into ketosis? I started eating keto about 3 months ago and my blood sugar levels are basically in normal range now, but until my A1C is tested again I won’t know where my resistance level is at in terms of repairing itself.
Same problem here but when i started training grappling /bjj in the afternoon with a fat fast. About an hour after training my blood sugar start to drop in the 130-170 range and stay there all night even after my HFLC meals. And Id wake up in the morning a little high. But then repeat and it would go down later in the day. Over time the morning high start getting lower and lower. Try some form of cardio and you’ll see those numbers come down. I didnt like this diet that much until I added hard afternoon training. The training also lowers corticol although spiking it a little while training. Its a good trade off . A little high early in the day but low all evening and night. Im a type 2 btw

I’m really devastated after being in low carbs plus intermittent fasting my A1C levels went up to 5.5 though I was 5.1 only in 4 months plus high cholesterol. I don’t know what went wrong! If I complete with this method definitely I will be pre-diabetic after another 3 months.
I am a MODY 2 diabetic. What’s weird is the first TWO weeks of keto I slowly lowered from tastings of 120 to 140 to a consistent 80-88 all day. Now, in week 3, I’m up to 99 to 109 consistently. But I’m not eating anything different. I’m stumped!
Thanks for your story. I had the same thing happen- I started keto with IF, and my mid 120’s fasting dropped fast. I didn’t even know my meter could show just 2 digits ! I was mid 90s’ with only a 10 point move postprandial. Then, like the next week, and since, I’ve been around 115 – 124. I’ve tracked my diet, doing 16/8, no cheating, 20g carbs a day. I eat 2 meals and vary rarely have any kind of calories between. in the past month since starting keto, i’ve dropped 25#. I’m solid on nutrients ( some supplements ).

Great video! I have a couple questions however. I am a type 2 diabetic and I have been doing Keto (6 months) and Intermittent Fasting 22:2 (last 4 weeks) and I lost about 30 lbs since March . However, I do get very strange results from the process. My blood glucose is rarely under 10 (especially in the morning: dawn phenomenon), but as soon as I use insulin, I drop like a ball and I feel very weak and dizzy. So that is a major problem as it is very hard for me to regulate my blood glucose with the conventional way while fasting/keto (carbs under 20g/day) and I am afraid that by keeping my blood glucose that high I will cause issues to my kidney and other organs. On the other hand, my ketones are mostly between 1 and 3, which suggest that my natural insulin level is low, even with all that blood glucose, and that my body is using ketones for energy. As context, I didn’t change my glasses prescription in the last 5 years and I recently did a full eye exam and my optometrist confirmed that my eyes are in perfect health. A lot of things that are not consistent with high blood glucose. Oh, and even when my blood glucose is high (14+) but fasting, I feel very energetic and focussed and I am actually very surprised by the readings. It used to be that as my blood glucose would reach 10+ I would be very sleepy and moody, but not its not the case. How bad really is blood glucose vs insuline? Is there something that could explain my high blood glucose while in ketosis? And I am unlikely to be in ketoacidosis with ketone readings between 1 and 3. Do you have reading recommendation so I can understand better my situation? Many thanks!
I was recently diagnosed with pre diabetes. I have been doing the ketogenic diet for about 3 months now. Ever since I bought urine strips I have been SCARED to death because almost every night my strips read off the charts above 16 as if I were in ketoacidosis. I don’t know what to do now. I was losing so much weight too. I quit this diet for now out of fear that I had ketoacidosis. You said in one of your other videos that you’ve never seen anyone measure over a 7. I can’t find a video on what to do if this happens. Should I continue to do the diet and take glucose perhaps?

I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes recently, I am 35 years old. Obese and family history of diabetes. It made me change my life, low carb , intermittent fasting exercising 4 days a week. Lost 18kgs so far from 23rd July 2020. I remember it distinctly because that was the day I took blood tests. Repeated blood tests exactly 3 months later, my a1c from 8.8 is 6. Fasting sugar from 9.1 is 4.1 . Post prandial sugar 5.2 . Liver enzymes from 100 over to 10-25 range. Basically it worked like magic. Absolutely no medications. This knowledge is life changing. And I try to tell this to everyone I can. Thank you Dr Berg!

electrolytes are everything on this diet, mainly sea salt fixes most issues , too much mag can cause diarrhea, sucks you quit because of electrolytes. When I feel woozy it fixes me every time

@j e nah. It helps that I am a doctor. I can monitor things closely. But if you are asymptomatic with high hba1c , guidelines do recommend trying lifestyle changes for 6 months
@lala land i had started a keto diet 1 month before I was diagnosed. The doctor told me to take the meds and keep the same keto diet but the pharmacist said it can be dangerous and I should add carbs.
@j e I am not sure about your results, so can’t comment. I used to get hypoglycemia symptoms when I first started intermittent but after a week or two, things became ok. also I didn’t do strict keto. I used to take complex carbs like oats, gram flour, occasionally some lentils and couscous. I would weigh and try to eat less than 100gm carb per day
I wonder if you’re having a detox effect?
Also, look into Iodine and the book called the iodine crisis by Lynne Farrow, she also talks about a salt flushing protocol to push detoxed materials out of the bloodstream (mainly when starting iodine supplementation but I wonder if you could benefit as well) . Whey protein is also very quickly absorbed into the body and spiked blood sugar.

@-A Stranger On The Internet actually things are going very well. I now do 16:8 (or 18:6) fasting normally as part of my usual day (skip breakfast and eat late lunch). I do not follow strict keto anymore but i focus on real food (meat and veggies). Because of the ongoing fasting i can cheat and my glucose level is maintained pretty easy. I even had to cut down on fast acting insuline as it often drops me in hypo. So all in all it is now a very easy way of life to maintain and my reliance to medicines has drastically dropped.

I bonked while in deep deep ketosis (6 months into keto), I think it was my adrenals taking a hit. Adding in mild pregnenalone, licorice, nu salt potassium and mag. All them adaptive shrooms are seriously fodmappy.
