I just bought a large tub of non organic oats and I was at the store debating whether to spend the same amount for a smaller organic option. Wow. Definitely going back to buy the organic one. Thank you for this!!
Thank you so much for being on this platform. I learn so much from you every time I watch. Your energy is infectious and I strive to live a life like you. Thanks Simnett!
Thank you so much, what a nice comment!
just want to share something I wish I started years ago but it’s to buy at least 1 thing in bulk every month. In ~6 months I’ve amassed a pretty well so far by ‘splashing out’ on say 5kg grains here, a couple kg of nuts/beans there etc.. but the prices per portion are always pretty impressive, even with organic foods. I’d highly recommend at trying it out, I’ve been telling all my family and friends to try it. and let’s be real, the jars-full-of-colourful-food aesthetic is great👌
I love these kinds of videos! Always super informative and I learn a lot.
Oh nice ! How do you store the nuts ? I’ve heard people freeze them but you must need a big freezer ?
In Europe there is an increasing focus on biological control methods, which involves the use of biological agents rather than chemical ones to control the pest species. It‘s a promising technique but still faces many obstacles. Hopefully it will be further elaborated in the future!
I’m so lucky I live in Italy. Down here we have the world’s most restrictive laws on pesticides.
@Kelyrin – douceur et dessin in a jar on the bench, I’ve never heard of them being frozen tbh I’ve heard of people keeping then in the fridge in like Texas or w/e but no need to where I live
I have started switching to organic options after hauling non organic garbanzo beans out of the field to the processers. The plants are sprayed with Roundup as mentioned in the video and it’s said to kill everything but the bean. I have trouble believing that because the plants are so brown and shriveled up, anything that can live through that has to be far from its natural state.
I prefer to purchase Italian made brands when I can just for that reason. Their practices are human focused and not primarily for monetary gain such as the US
We eat organic as much as possible, and have for years, but this was very much appreciated and informative. Thank you, Derek!
I know that here in the UK, it has been found that the “organic” labelled food is very often found to contain the same pesticides as non organic. Life is a mine field these days, and those of us who choose to live healthily are made to pay more. It really points to being punished for trying to stand apart from their programs of population control. I can only urge all to grow your own. That way we can step away from our dependency on the system and take sovereignty back into our own hands. Love all. 🙏
Thanks for sharing this!
Hi Derek! Thank you so much for doing this video – I’m right there with you!! I’ve been an organic proponent for 30 years. My family thinks I’m a little crazy, but I feel this is extremely important. I have a small, organic vegetable, herb, and flower garden. Glyphosate is so bad. I know someone who sprayed their yard with Roundup. Two days later, he was mowing his yard, in sandals, and he didn’t realize he had a tiny cut on his toe. He ended up in the emergency room because his toe started swelling up really badly and he was feeling really sick. When the hospital was trying to figure out what might be wrong, they initially felt he had been poisoned with something (which he really was), this was the only thing he could remember that might be relevant. And, it was! Thank you for all you do. Love your channel, and thank you, again, for this important video.

I’ve never bought organic veggies but you are starting to change my mind.
Also, there is no comparison between a home grown strawberry to those expensive, hard and tasteless strawberries commonly sold in super markets. Strawberry plants can be home grown in vertical “towers” very easily in a small space and will produce all the new plants you can ever want on their runners. You have much less problem with insect and slug issues growing vertically too. You can also grow strawberries ( and kale and lettuce, ect.) indoors hydroponically.
I am 100% with you on this organic journey. Hate to think sometimes of the crap sprayed on my foods. Grow as much as I can. 💪 ❤️
I eat oats every day and buy the non orangic from bulk barn because they don’t sell it in bulk. Now my grandson eats oats daily as well, but i buy organic for him. I need to think this scenario better.
@Bella Kim this is great to know! Thank you 🇮🇹
I have followed you for a few years and rarely bother commenting. But it seems important to encourage you when determining your place in nutrition empowering content. I have respected your abstaining from polarizing topics in general. This kind of video is helping not hurting. If you took pause before committing to this topic, I am proud of you for choosing to do right by us despite whatever risk you face. Keep this up, Teach!
Great post! I remember reading about the circle of poison when I researched the organic debate before… a little scary.
Wikipedia: The Circle of Poison (COP) refers to the export of domestically banned pesticides for use on foods elsewhere, some of which returns by way of import.
It’s not just about consuming the pesticide, we also have to think of the workers exposed to pesticides at full strength day after day.
You should do more educational videos like this one!! You are very professionnal and well documented. Keep up the good work, thank you 🙂
You are! We get vegetables and fruit from Italy, they’re sooo good, do much better than Swiss grown.
Thank you!
I just gotta say I’ve never seen not organic tofu. I wouldn’t even know where to get it around me lol.
Anyway – I remember hearing that Organic sometimes allows a whole slew of other “organic” pesticides that haven’t been tested long term. That’s not to say organic isn’t good as a category but it’s certainly more complicated than “good/bad”.
Yep. USDA Organic guidelines for crops say:
“Crop Standards
The organic crop production standards require that:
Land must have had no prohibited substances applied to it for at least 3 years before the harvest of an organic crop.
Soil fertility and crop nutrients will be managed through tillage and cultivation practices, crop rotations, and cover crops, supplemented with animal and crop waste materials and allowed synthetic materials.
Crop pests, weeds, and diseases will be controlled primarily through management practices including physical, mechanical, and biological controls. When these practices are not sufficient, a biological, botanical, or synthetic substance approved for use on the National List may be used.
Operations must use organic seeds and other planting stock when available.
The use of genetic engineering, ionizing radiation and sewage sludge is prohibited.”
So basically, they have to TRY to not use pesticides but if it’s not working then they can use it anyway. I think this issue can be solved with different types of farming. Like vertical farming where pests can be more easily controlled in a greenhouse. Or have small little community farms where one or two people can tend to the plants.
Amazing job Derek, thanks for informing all of us. I agree with there being a connection between the pesticide increase & Alzheimer’s disease as well. I try to buy organic as well when possible; more expensive up front, but one can’t put a price on quality of life.
I believe it’s because Roundup is sprayed and it drifts to neighboring farms in the air.
I didn’t that about organic foods here in the UK! Where did you read that?
I usually try to buy as much organic as possible but since the huge increase in inflation & cost of living here in the UK it is getting more and more difficult. I often wonder if I am just wasting my money on expensive foods I can’t really afford, but reading your comment (and others like it) bolsters me to carry on and reassures me that I’m doing the right thing. 🙂
I often wonder whether I’m just wasting my money on overpriced organic food, especially with the cost of living so high here in the UK at the moment, I see others making cuts here and there and wonder if I could be doing the same with my groceries. But having watched your video I feel bolstered to continue buying organic wherever possible, even if it’s more expensive. Thank you:)
Great idea about the vertical growing. I only have a tiny patio so this could be a good option for me. Thanks!
When I decided to start growing a lot of my own food a few years ago, I used the dirty dozen as a starting point. I grow every one of them organically in growing zone 6b in Ontario, Canada. Thanks for this info Derek, it looks like I need to learn a bit more about my grains and legumes.
it does not make a difference. I used to do the same thing. Buy the more small expensive oats. Then I realized this is dumb, and buy the regular big one, and literally nothing about my changed. Pesticides and Glyphosate aren’t actually harmful in the amounts that are consumed. This is unnecessary things to worry about.
i had a question about this, i’ve seen some videos on tiktok about some farmers saying that the pesticides are fine and people are dumb for buying organic etc etc. since you’ve worked in the fields, why would you think some farmers are opposed to organic? i’ve done my fair share of research and i’d rather still buy organic since it’s better for the soil, better for the people since i would hate to be smelling and being around pesticides all day, and i know organic carries more phytonutrients than conventional.
I love it. We should all get back to basics. So many unnecessary industries cluttering the earth.
Me too!
@Veganimal same. Since neighbors can’t be avoided organic foods can be labeled organic if they have a minimal contamination amount. Probably different from country to country, but probably all less than 10% to their conventional counterpart. I know Germany surely had theirs closer to 1%
@Crystal Figueroa but that’s on tik tok…..not very reliable but I think farmers would think that because they feel like they need to be prideful of using pesticides because it’s old school or maybe they can’t afford to go organic or they just deny the effects straight up or they are sponsored by round up/mansantos
Such a good comment
@Link Link I felt the same way as you until I got endometrial cancer. It was horrendous, expensive, painful, scary. Now I buy organic.
