Fat Burning Anti Aging Kitchen
Taurine benefits the heart and boosts performance by helping the mitochondria, the cell powerhouses, work more efficiently with minimal side effects. At least that's what the social media says, so what does the research actually show and can taurine help with anti aging?
Here are the Taurine brands I would buy if I choose to supplement:

I started taking 500mg of Taurine a couple of years ago, not long before I went to bed, because of it’s known sleep improvement benefits. About a year ago I upped my dose to a gram a night. I’m delighted to find out about these additional health benefits 😁. Many thx.
Thanks for another educational video. I’ve taken Taurine off and on for years, and I agree that it is indeed underrated. The biggest impact of Taurine is Brain, Heart, Vision and Liver health. When mainstream medicine or experts say a nutrient is ‘conditionally essential’ can they also define the conditions that make it essential? Also, how much of these nutrients does our food supply still retain these days. For me, the benefits of Taurine are too numerous to leave to chance of getting it from diet, so I will continue to supplement. Something else to note is that Taurine is an osmolyte i.e. it will slightly alter the properties of bodily fluids to ensure that cell wall is stable. The stability of your cell wall is so critical to ensure that nutrients (go in) and wastes (are properly expelled), also in these covid times it helps to prevent penetration by viruses, also if say a virus penetrates and you have a cytokine storm, Taurine has antioxidant properties to help out. Taurine acts like insulin, it will reduce your blood sugar. If you’re concerned about heart health, you probably want to go for Magnesium Taurate, If you want antioxidant protection, you can supplement with Methionine which will yield Taurine and Cysteine (which also converts to Gluthatione). Taurine is one of the few nutrients that can help grow brain cells!
I have used taurine for years, and like you mentioned, there are a lot of good studies supporting its usefulness in many health and anti-aging protocols. The only thing I would say based on my own experience and others, is that to start with low doses and monitor how your digestive system is affected, since taurine can stimulate bile synthesis and mobility. When I was using doses in the 4 digit range, it stimulated my bowels too much and caused loose stools, and I have read others having this issue. I knocked down my dosage to under a gram and things calmed down. Some people can take high doses with no issues, but if you do take high doses and have digestive issues, just back down the dosage.
Does it empty the gallbladder, because i have gallbladder sludfe because of gallstones
Useful video as usual, Brad. Maybe you could also make a video about another amino-acid : L-carnosine which could also have some longetivity features..
I am 58 and at 57 I started getting heart palpitations. I was short on potasium which I take daily which helped but didn’t eliminate them. I am also vegetarian. I started taking taurine and magnesium and creatine daily and it’s really helped. I have taken taurine daily for months and have noticed only benefits.
After a takotsubo event (similar to a heart attack but no clot) which damaged my heart (LVEF down to 45%) I identified taurine as a necessary supplement shortly after. Especially as I went almost totally vegan and still am been taking 500 mg/d for the 8 years since then. If I recall correctly it also helps prevent fibrosis of the heart.
I’m 48 and had crazy heart palpitations as well. I cured that with 600-900 mg magnesium. Taurine seems to be a good addition!
I find your videos so helpful Dr Brad. They are always clear, understandable and totally credible. Really appreciate your research. I’ve recently been supplementing with 500mg of taurine because my main dietary source is eggs only. Hopefully some cheap insurance.
Great research and work as usual 🙂
But please put all ads at the start, it’s really annoying to let ads interrupt your talking and the viewer’s attention. Thank you in advance
Hi Brad, thank you for the great content. Its fresh and giving me good inspiration for my health. I just wanted to point a typo in your daily stack. The melatonin says 500mg instead of 500mcg. Most will catch it, but uninformed listener might try this gigantic dosage. Keep up the great work!
Taurine is a commonly added to energy drinks. I never knew why. Your presentation helped explain the reason why to me. Thanks.
Thanks. Another excellent overview of the research. I elected to take 500 mg/d about 8 years ago after an MI (Takatsubo syndrome, no clot) where research i saw at the time indicated cardiovascular benefits, supporting, along with Mg, endothelial progenitor cell formation and reducing fibrosis. At the same time I also transitioned to a mostly vegan diet with a lot of vegetables, and no simple carbs, to support nitric oxide formation and vascular health, a major focus. Not being certain about bodies ability to maintain taurine stores (I’m 66) I elected to supplement.
PS Given all the focus on NAD+/NADH ratio decline with aging and the fact that Taurine increases this ratio, among all the other benefits, along with being inexpensive makes it an excellent supplement for people like me who are mostly vegan.
@Marcos better quality sleep for one thing. Other aminos can also help with sleep. Glycine & theanine are two others to consider.
Note that when supplementing taurine, some people get relaxed from it, and some get energized. Many take it before bedtime, but there are some people who can’t because they do get energized, which messes with their sleep. So, trial and error, to see how you respond. I think the relaxing effect comes from the lowering of blood pressure.
It has literally helped my energy and endurance levels at work and seems to have helped my heart as well… just started supplementing with my protein shakes.
With me and my not so balanced diet, I definitely will look into the taurine supplements! Thanks for the interesting and informative video.
which brand
which brand did u taking?
@Henny P California Gold Nutrition
L-Taurine, AjiPure, 1,000 mg, 60 Veggie Capsules
It made me really drowsy, why is that? I stopped taking it.
@Perig Gouanvic Chelated magnesium is what I have always used for heart palpitations and heavy breathing. Always worked for me age 56.
I feel nothing when I take it.
Just found this one on taurine after viewing lots of your presentations. I have been taking 2gm am and pm for years for successful suppression of AF. Prior to that I was on maximum allowable dose of flecainide (less now). Still would flip in and out of AF at the slightest provocation. Then on taurine life returned to normal, no probs with coffee, alcohol, cold drinks, coughing etc triggers. My understanding is that it acts to suppress irritability of cardiac conduction system and lowers vagal tone so no more cold drink oesophageal triggers etc. Also suppresses ordinary garden-type palpitations as well. Now I see all the other benefits too, bonus! I am an N=1 trial with positive results. (70 yr old retired medical practitioner)
Thanks for the spot and all of the comments! I have been a vegan since 2004 and have been taking a 1/2 teaspoon of taurine daily for about 3-4 years. Tip: I buy it in the organic variety in powder form! It is much, much cheaper. Offers are all over the internet inclucing from that company which begins with the letter “a”. Stay well and happy everyone.
I used to drink Red Bull (1000mg of Taurine) before bedtime and would sleep like a baby. The cafeïne in the drink didn’t affect me at all…
I have been supplementing with Taurine for 25 years. 25 years ago I was a manic-depressive. Then I read a book about Dilantin, claiming that Dilantin improved depression. I found a doctor that prescribed Dilantin for me and I began using Dilantin for relief of the depressive cycle.
Then I read that Dilantin had side effects and was not for continuous use. At that point I contacted Dr. Ward Bond (PhD in nutrition) and Dr. Bond advised me that Taurine was the closest vitamin to Dilantin. I added 1gm Taurine to my stack at that time (1995) and I have been using it ever since. I use Taurine as a powder and I add it to my daily electrolyte drink.
The electrolyte drink contains Sodium Ascorbate, Calcium Ascorbate, potassium bicarbonate, Taurine, and I add Magnesium Citrate liquid to my drinking water.
@Guuseh Is it acceptable to cycle by going off ALL supp’s for 1 week a month (of excluding an essential supp of course)?
Brilliant !
@NewZed absolytely agree. tried taurine works well. tried glycine worked fantastic BUT decreases to work day after day… after 1 week or 2 seems to diminish effect. instead theanine overl long time seems always as powerful.
now i skip theanine and glycine because i simply buy one supplement….taurine, that works for EVERYTHING. i can take presleep, pre workout, prior some intense brain tasks etc
What brand of Taurine do you use ?
Before bed
Hey. Does magnesium Taurate makes anxiety worse ?
I have started taking Taurine to reduce my blood sugar. I read study that said that in trials, Taurine reduced A1c, fasting blood sugar, and insulin resistance. So far, results are very encouraging. Cant wait to see my next A1c.
You briefly mentioned something important to me and my current strategy of reducing estrogen dominance in order to support thyroid gland and hormone function. My primary strategy consists of using bile binders, plant fibers and plant resins to bind amd excrete bile and excess estrogens instead of resorbing. Since taurine is also conserved by resorbing with the bile, and is linked to supportive actions in hypothyroid and thyroid hormone function, I’m going to try adding it to my thyroid support protocol since I may be blocking an important source of taurine by taking bile binders. Another consideration is people with low stomach acid, or those on acid blockers to treat (presumed) high stomach acid/GERD. Those on acid blockers are just not as able to break down dietary protein as well as those with robust stomach acid. Given the widespread chronic use of acid blockers and acid neutralizers, there could be very well be a hidden epidemic of taurine and overall protein/amino acid deficiency especially in the aging heartburn-prone population!
@Duarte the magnesium can imbalance your other electrolytes if a deficiency is present and could have paradoxical effects
@Jonathan Talaro it can be seen with blood work ? How can one measure it ? Thanks
