This was an excellent in-depth explanation of the different options available for different needs. I was wondering if you have ever used the Thermage treatment, if so what were the results? Thank you
I wish I would have known this earlier. I heard about a very light laser that I wanted around my eyes. I saw a demo on a health show using a specific laser and my local dermatologist had that laser. I really just needed a very little around the eyes and the rest of my face was good.
In 2019 I set up a treatment.
Now, here’s the importance of heavy research and then being very aware at each moment. You see, as I sat in he chair the assistant prepped my face and used a machine that hurt like holy hell. I said STOP because according to research the laser I was getting didn’t hurt. She said the cool pack I applied afterward on my skin would ease the pain. I wondered why I was asked to bring a cool pack because the video I saw was a quick walk-away procedure with no mention of a cool pack. The video on that laser procedure said it wouldn’t hurt.
That’s when the assistant doing the procedure told me it was a full face laser and that it would hurt.
Since I already started I decided to tough it out to the end. How bad could it be right? Wrong! My god, my husband had to get me 5 more cool packs for the entire face and neck as 2 weren’t enough. For about 4 days my face was a raw scab that was agonizing searing heat pain, burning like my skin was flayed and dipped in boiling oil. (Ok, I’ve never had the flaying happen, but if I did I’m pretty sure this is how it would feel).
I couldn’t go back to work after a week so I had to book of another 2 weeks just to heal enough to do my job.
The office didn’t tell me that this could be a potential scenario. I felt lied to BECAUSE I WAS LIED TO.
The sad thing is that this procedure I had done didn’t touch the eyes, as it was too harsh (yeah, no kidding), and because my face skin was already good you couldn’t notice any difference after it healed.
In other words, I went through excruciating facial pain recovering from a procedure I didn’t need and DIDN’T ASK FOR.
When I listen to people talk about the full face laser, and don’t explain the raw skin that burns on fire and the scabbing that takes at least a few weeks to heal (as serious scabs usually do) then I know they aren’t honest and I won’t let them touch me. I really want to use that laser on them and then make them go back to work in days so they can feel what it’s like.
Do your research and question everything. Make sure you get someone who is trustworthy, not like the assistant I went to at Dr Lowe’s dermatologist clinic in Alberta, Canada, or you will endure an unexpected nightmare that might not even benefit your skin.
Dr. Karam, could you do a follow-up video discussing potential adverse effects patients could experience from laser treatments based on their skin complexions, please? I was told that darker complexions are more prone to burns. Is this still the case? Thank you!
It’s true you have to be more careful and pretreat with lighteners etc. I will definitely do a video on that.
This is literally the most informative! Thank you Dr Karam for not treating patients like we couldn’t possibly understand all this. Thank you 🙂
This was extremely well done and very comprehensive. My brother was an old school plastic surgeon who never believed in anything that he considered “topical”. He was so wrong and I have been using different types of lasers and topical products for 20 years. It makes all the difference!
And may I say, you are a delight to watch ( extremely handsome)! 😂
Thank you-great content topic! My derm recently told me that the very slight “crepey” texture I was starting to see on my front upper neck could be addressed by lasers but did not go into your level of detail. Appreciate the education! 🙌🏻🙌🏻
How suitable are any of these treatments for people with deeper skin tones, that is, those who are easily prone to hyperpigmentation ?
This is an amazing video! Not only for aestheticians like me, but especially for clients who are wanting to become more educated on this topic 🤩
This is great information. I have sun damage on my driver’s side cheek; and my derm told me it wasn’t melasma & could be treated with laser whenever I wanted to address it. This gives me a starting point. Thank you!
Thanks Dr. Karam I needed this breakdown. Can you do another video and cover what type of lasers with different type of skin tones (ie olive, tan, dark, etc.) avoid? For perspective I’m olive/light tan and a photofacial years ago burned my skin and made my dark spots worse. Which lasers should people with more pigmented skin avoid? What are the right questions to ask?
Extremely informative; thank you for explaining the different types of lasers and results.
COULD YOU POSSIBLY DISCUSS MIcroneedling (sp)?? And/ or other skin treatments to improve texture?
Thanks!!!!
Hi Dr Karam, thanks so much for the great info. Nowadays lasers are not the only treatment that avail on the market. HIFU (ultrasound) has been the most offered in Asia. What do you think about other treatments than laser? how effective are these options and are any side effects in the long run? Thank you so much!
I got a Q-switch laser for age/brown spots on my cheeks just once and they faded over a few months then disappeared forever! Was thrilled! 😄
Really does have excellent videos! Maybe one day I could actually afford to go to him, I live in Florida, chances slim to none ! But, I could dream ! Lol
@DrAmirKaram Would you also address resurfacing acne scarring with laser treatment. Please and thank you. Take care.
Hey doc ! Very informative video indeed . I am from India . Co2 is the most common laser treatment done here . My concern is fine lines and dull skin . I am at my early forties .I would like to know what laser treatment should I opt for and how often rather how many sitting should one needs to take along with vit c and retinal application . . Would really appreciate your honest valuable suggestion . Take care . Love from India.
Wow – Dr Karam, you de-mystified the whole laser subject to me! It is a minefield out there and despite several consultations (admittedly with non-surgical staff) no-one could really explain which laser is doing what ! Thank you so very much. All I need you to do now is have a clinic in the UK – even if just visiting – possible?
Excellent explainer. I’ve been preparing a video about my Halo experience and had to do so much research breaking everything down – studies, the whole thing. Being that I’m not a Dr – it was a lot of information to take in, understand and then condense so the average person can understand. This lays it out in a simple and yet thorough manner. AND, the sunscreen, retinol/retinA follow-up is so key. Just fantastic!
@Cathy InColorado Oh yeah, having gone through that level of dishonesty the thought did cross my mind. When my face healed I inspected it with a magnifying glass, but like I said because I didn’t need that laser I could see no difference than before — which was both a major relief and aggravating at the same time.
In 2014 I got scammed by another doctor at the Hummingbird spa. I went in to ask if there was help for malar bags. The dr hooked me up for filler, which didn’t help at all. A few weeks later I went in to an experienced esthetician working out of that spa who said filler wouldn’t help, only surgery could remove larger malar bag fat ball puffy pads at the cheekbone. The esthetician knew that the Dr knew this, and it was a very uncomfortable convo to say the least. I left a detailed review on their website. Actually, the filler in the cheekbone felt very painful for days, like my face was slammed into a cement wall. The undereye filler and cheekbone filler, along with a botox at the eyes that she recommended (even though I didn’t need at that time) all looked saggy after it left the skin, because it stretched the tissues like a balloon that loses air has stretched tissues. It was am obvious money grab. The spa I went to, along with the dermatologist climic I went to, and many so-called professionals, wouldn’t recommend scrulptra because it’s natural and lasts a few years…. there’s not the level of return business $$ with things like sculptra. I remember the one and only time I got talked into filler under the eyes and cheekbones I laid up in excruciating facial pain wondering why I wasn’t told that it could potentially feel like you were hit in the face with an oar.
I have learned the hard way.
Dr Karam is educating me and I feel like I could trust his information cause I’m ready to get my under eyes fixed after they sunk and hollowed when the filler wore off.
I’m not sure how long fat transfers last long or if sculptra would be a better undereye option.
Now I have to fix the mess that the other doctors made.
If I was a doctor I wouldn’t do botox or fillers (they can go somewhere else) and I would explain all potential pain sensation. cause I have a high pain threshold but it would have been better overall if they told me the potential pain factor.
@d c Exactly. One thing I’ve learned is no fillers under the eyes. I have a tiny bit of hollow under my eyes but I’m not going to worry about them until it gets a lot worse. My cosmetic surgeon warned me that fat pads have memory. So if I can weight in tummy or hips, and they took fat from there, my under eye fat pads will get fat too if I gain weight. So if you decide on fat pads, make sure it comes from a skinnier part of your body. I’m researching the upper eye surgery & down time.
@Cathy InColorado thanks so much for that tip. That makes sense. Plus it’s very interesting to see how the nature of fat behaves after menopause. The last thing we need is to go from slightly hollow undere eyes to bags My under arms seem a good choice for a fat donor, or the back of the neck would be even better. Just a little fat there. All the best to you gentle stranger.
Thank you SO much for this super educational breakdown. No one has ever explained it like this to me and I’ve been getting laser treatments for years.
I had a similar situation about 17 years ago but in the end I saw wonderful results. I do need a “Do-over” though. How was your end results?

Another excellent and informative video. Thank you Dr. Karam for taking time out of your day to educate us. You have a way of explaining treatments in a concise and very easy to understand.
I have the same question .u have been told by more than one plastic surgeon over the years that I am not a candidate for full face laser resurfacing
I think he did a micro needling video a couple of weeks ago 🙂
@India-Jazmine Saax Thanks!!!
I would love to see a video on anti-aging laser recommendations for mature women with deeply melanated skin tones like mine.
Thank you for this great video.
You really explain things very well and make
these treatments easy to understand.
I saw some great results in a couple of the pictures
you show here. I might have a treatment done some day.
The picture where the skin looks much tighter under
the jawline really got my attention. I heard that there is
a laser treatment that can shrink the tissue under your
jawline and that seems to be what I saw. If this is true
that is great progress because you do not have to have
serious surgery.
Thank you, Dr AmirKaram.
